I doubt it as well. The GOP as we knew it is dead. The party of Trump is what exists now. There is no room for reason left. Only cruelty and hatred of the other.
Our best shot at seeing an eventual return of the GOP is for Trump to be decimated in the next election. For it to be shown electorally that America took a flyer on him and regretted it and with fervor reject him.
The midterms were a good start to this. But rather than the rest of the GOP take an assessment of where they stood afterwards in a post-mortem, they have dug in further in their silence and complicity. That tells me there is still a lesson to be learned. And it’s going to take loss of every single part of government for them to wake up.
And honestly by then, it may be too late. The GOP may already be dead and relegated to a regional/rural party that is perpetually in the minority. The decision to not expand their base, and contract instead may be their death knell.
Yes - that last part is the craziest part about all this. With Clinton running, they had an ideal chance to get a candidate that could expand their base and perhaps set them down a successful path for the future. They blew it. With Trump at the helm, the base has shrunk and now they have a major image problem. It was a stupid move all the way around.
Exactly. The ball was tee’d up for them and they whiffed. And like we both said back when Trump secures the nomination, he will end up being the best thing to ever happen to the Democrats. Who were a total mess. With the exception of one politician, Obama, they were being decimated across the nation in races big and small. But along comes Trump. And the cruelty prevailed, the hatred of the “other” was exposed, which is burning the party down from the inside.
Kasich could run as a Democrat as well as a Republican. He might have better luck beating the likes Spartacus and Pocahontas than Trump.
He could also form his own Chameleon Party. There are several options open to him.
Kasich is a putz! He is an bleeding heart for illegals and open borders. He really is just a liberal in Republican clothing (that’s why he is so popular in this thread) so I say go ahead & run as he will fall flat on his face.
This is one of the ■■■■■■■■■ aspects of the right’s long, long descent into Trumpism and crackpottery: it makes people like Kasich or even Paul Ryan seem “normal” or “centrist.”
I know he also wants to take your guns away without due process, run up the deficit without spending cuts, loves additional taxes (tariffs) and talks bad out military vets…
Eh, just because he was the least worst of the GOP primary semi-finalists in 2016 doesn’t endear me to Mr. “White People, You Need To Start Having More Babies So The Minorities Don’t Outbreed You.”
Wait to the democrats (possibly elect) a 77 year old socialist who is wanting to pass a 33 trillion dollar healthcare plan and carbon tax that will dramatically increase energy prices, then we can realign the goalposts.
