New York Senator and possible 2020 contender Kirsten Gillibrand became the first US Senator to call for the abolishment of ICE this week, saying the agency has become a “deportation force” along the US-Mexico border.

Gillibrand was speaking with CNN Thursday night when she was asked to comment on other liberal lawmakers’ demand that Congress abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, saying it was time to “start over” and build something that “actually works.”

“I believe that [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] has become a deportation force … and that’s why I believe you should get rid of it, start over, reimagine it and build something that actually works,” said the Senator.

Gillibrand’s comments echo those of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who also called for an end to the federal agency this week; saying the department was “broken” and “unreasonable.”
