Country A has no tariffs on the goods it imports.

They are trading with country B.

To protect it’s own domestic orange growing industry they pass a 50% tariff on the Oranges they import from A.

Fair trade has just ended because there is no longer free trade.

A then reciprocates with a 50% tariff on all goods imported from B and says it will remain in place until B drops the tariff on oranges.

B drops the tariff, we now have a level playing field and A drops it’s tariffs as well.

We now have fair and free trade between A and B.

Why did B drop the tariff?

How high did the price of goods rise during the time period? How did this affect citizens’ purchasing power? For how long?

How soon until B imposes tariffs on apples? Do we just start over?

That all depends on what your goal was initially.

Consumes will always bear the cost but if that short term pain leads to fair and free trade in the future they will also get the long term benefit.

Producers tend to be the ones that bear the price in the long run as they either have to learn to compete on that level playing field, produce something else or get into a different business altogether.

You’ve walked the lie back a little, Now how about the truth (contrary to popular belief it doesn’t hurt).

It needs to be reintroduced in the Canadian Parliament after elections, since all pending legislation is tossed when the current Parliament was dissolved.

Nor is it “dead” in the U.S. Congress, albeit it has taken a back seat due to the focus on impeachment.

I don’t think it has ever been tried in its truest form.

But I do know that we do better in periods of freer trade.

Periods of protectionism have always ended badly at best, catastrophically at worst.

This is ■■■■■■■ easy…if it is manufactured producing more pollution than what it would generate if manufactured here in the US, it shouldn’t be allowed to be sold in the US. A lot of production would return to the US and there’d be no need for tariffs. BAM…ezpz. The problem is…our government created this. Then as China pollutes, our same government that created this problem, wants to preach about man made global warming.
