Is it a red flag if a company asks for a Social Security card upon being hired?

The company I just got hired on to is asking for my Driver’s License, social security card, finger printing, and to fill out a consent form for a background check.

I know your social security number is something you should never give out, but am wondering if they need it to issue health benefits and pay stub.

Yes your employer needs your SSN. It’s needed for verification and pay reasons.

These days most health insurance plans do not use your SSN. If it is an employer sponsored plan they will just receive an eligibility file at regular intervals with details of employees to be covered.

Employment is basically the one thing SSN is meant for. You’ll have to hand over your card to every employer you ever have.

Congratulations on the new job, I hope!?

I was thinking about the I-9 form right away.

SSN is just one of the acceptable documents from column C.

It is kind of necessary for employer’s to know your Social Security number so that you get proper credit for your payroll tax deductions and for your future benefits.
