Saturday at Long Pond - The IndyCars hold their 1st practice…

.
It was delayed for a half hour, due to weather, but when it was over a rookie topped the time charts, but it wasn’t the rookie everyone might guess. Indy Lights veteran Zach Veach driving in his rookie season for Andretti Autosport was the fastest guy at the end of the session.

.
Here was the order of speed for the P-1 session, with times for the TOP FIVE: [R] denotes rookie:

.1 - Zach Veach [R], Andretti Autosport - time of 00:41.3997s for a speed of 217.393mph

.
2 - Josef Newgarden, Team Penske - time of 00:41.4716s for a speed of 217.016mph

.
3 - Alexander Rossi, Andretti Autosport - time of 00:41.4924s for a speed of 216.907mph

22 - Conor Daly, Harding Racing

.
.
.
Notable;

  • Zach was one of a handful of drivers that got to test at Pocono recently, and he credits that with helping him get the speed. Newgarden was the only other driver to crack 217 miles per hour. Zach has a P2 and a P4 in Indy Lights races at Pocono, so he is no stranger to the Triangle.

  • Zach also posted the best no-tow speed in the session, at 214.233 mph.

  • Conor Daly for Harding was plagued with mechanical problems that didn’t allow him to put in any laps at full chat. It’s going to be very hard for the driver to make any decent qualifying, unless they get lucky.
