Saturday at Road America - Indy Lights hold Season Round 7…

.
…and coming away the WINNER - for the fourth race in a row - was Colton Herta for Andretti Steinbrenner. P2 was points-rival and Andretti teammate Patricio O’Ward while P3 went to 1st-time Lights pole-sitter Victor Franzoni for Juncos Racing.

.

.
.
.
On the opening lap Victor took off cleanly with everyone slotting into place behind but by the time they got to Turn 5 Colton Herta was inside and past P2 starter Santi Urrutia for Belardi, while Pato O’Ward was inside of Aaron Telitz for Belardi in Turn 5, relegating him quickly to P5. On Lap 3, O’Ward grabbed P3 from Urrutia as the two passed under the Sargento Bridge while Colton edged closer to Victor. By lap 5 Franzoni could no longer hold Herta off and he was taken in Turn 5. O’Ward was also there to pressure Franzoni and within three corners Franzoni put a wheel off, allowing Pato to get him exiting the Carousel.

Pato then attacked Colton for several laps but the American teen was more composed and never put a wheel wrong, while the young Mexican seemed frantic behind him, eventually eating up his tires and wasting his push to pass. By the closing laps he decided best to settle into P2 and concentrate instead on keeping Franzoni behind him. Colton would WIN by a comfortable 3.7 seconds as Pato kept a second ahead of Victor.

Saturday at Road America - The kids from USF2000 race!..

.
…and the WINNER was series points-leader Kyle Kirkwood for Cape Motorsports while P2 was 16-year-old Kaylen Frederick for Pabst Racing and P3, in his best MRTI finish yet was Ireland’s Keith Donegan, the 2017 Shootout winner, driving today for BN Racing.

.

.
.
.
Pole-sitter Rasmus Lindh for Pabst Racing enjoyed that distinction for very little time as Kirkwood was by him as the two cars entered Turn 1 on lap 1. At the same time Kaylen Frederick was by his teammate Calvin Ming for P3 and Lucas Kohl for Pabst was by Igor Fraga for Exclusive Autosport for P5. Keith Donegan took P9 from Kyle Dupell for Team Pelfrey. As the huge pack of cars came around to Canada Corner Lucas was off in Turn 13, taking Mathias Soler-Obel for Sol.O Racing and Bruna Tomaselli for Team Pelfery with him. All would rejoin, but far back. By lap 2 Keith Donegan had advanced all the way to P4 and Alex Baron for Swan / RJB Motorsports, who started P13, was in P10.

Lap 4 saw the first caution as Sabre Cook for Team BENIK slid off exiting the carousel and got stuck in the kitty litter. The race re-started on Lap 6 and immediately Alex Baron jumped to P8. Lap 8 saw Calvin Ming pass Igor Fraga for P6 while Rasmus Lindh dropped from P2 to P5 in a Turn 1 shuffle, handing P2 to Kaylen. Rasmus would reclaim P4 from Kory Enders for DEForce Racing one lap later.

On lap 10 something at the rear of Sabre Cook’s car let go - either a tire or suspension, probably caused by her off-course excursion, earlier - and she was pitched off the road in Turn 7 to the left, then back across the road near Turn 8 and into the wall, bringing out a second caution. Sabre was okay but the clean-up was extensive and the race ended with the last two laps under caution.

.
.
.
Notable:

  • The last thing the competition needed was to let Kirkwood sail to victory under yellow, but he was comfortably in the lead and not threatened by Frederick when the yellow came out. Kirkwood’s formidable points lead was just extended, again.

Saturday afternoon at Road America - Pro Mazda close out with a great race…

.
The final race of the weekend for the Pro Mazda gang saw the exact same podium as Race 1 had been, with Dave Malukas for BN Racing grabbing his 2nd WIN in his Pro Mazda career, from pole, again. P2 was once again David’s teammate Toby Sowery and P3 was also once again Harrison Scott for RP Motorsport Racing.

.

.
.
.
On the opening lap Malukas and P2 starter Carlos Cunha for Juncos Racing got away clean as Rinus VeeKay for Juncos Racing was able to get by Raul Guzman for RP Motorsport Racing in Turn 1 for P3 and Rob Megennis for Juncos was able to pass Harrison Scott to take P8. As the cars entered Turn 5 there was a bunch of shuffling, including a 3-wide moment and points-leader Parker Thompson for Exclusive Autosport in P5 was pushed over into Raul Guzman in P4, causing Guzman’s suspension to fold up and bring out a caution, as Thompson dropped to P9. As the cars returned to the front straight it was Malukas, followed by VeeKay in P2 and and Cunha in P3. Toby Sowery had advanced from P6 to P4 and Harrison was in P5, now.

On the Lap 3 restart Toby jumped past Carlos to take P3. As lap 4 started Thompson had dropped all the way to P12, but then he started his march back. By the end of lap 4 he was in P8. On lap 5 Sowery passed Carlos for P3 and then passed Rinus to take P2. Lap 6 saw Parker pass Andres Gutierrez for Team Pelfrey to reclaim P7, while Harrison took P4 away from Carlos. By lap 7 Parker was passing Rob Megennis for P6. Andres would follow him through, sending Rob to P8. On lap 9 Parker was passing Carlos for P5.

Lap 13 set the podium as Harrison finally took P3 from Rinus and Parker swiftly followed through to take P4 and send VeeKay back to P5. While all this racing was going on behind him David Malukas was out front the whole way and never seriously challenged by Sowery, who was always in sight but never close enough. The race ended on Lap 14.

.
.
.
Notable:

  • This was a perfect weekend for Malukas - Not only did he take pole in both races and WINS in both races, but he also broke the track record - twice! The effort launched Malukas into 4th in the points over Harrison Scott.

  • Parker Thompson’s magnificent run back from P12 benefited him most by once again putting VeeKay and Cunha behind him at the finish, extending slightly his points lead over his two nearest points rivals.

.
.
Here is your happy podium, and yes it is a new pic and not a rehash of yesterday’s - That’s Toby Sowery in P2 on the left, David Malukas in P2 in the middle and Harrison Scott in P3 on the right:

.
.
.
With these two races behind them, this is the TOP FIVE in series points leaving Elkhart Lake:

1 - Parker Thompson 237
2 - Rinus VeeKay 191
3 - Carlos Cunha 188
4 - David Malukas 179
5 - Harrison Scott 174

Saturday afternoon at Road America - It’s time for the IndyCars to qualify!

.
…and that means it’s time for the IndyCar road & street course qualifying page. We present this to try to explain the intricate way that IndyCar has decided to qualify on road and street course. The procedure is designed to create maximum tension on the way to deciding pole, while also allowing cars to maximize their effort on what would be an otherwise crowded track. Our explanation of this is designed to create maximum headaches and in that we think we succeed.

.
.+++

.

So, how does this work? Around ovals qualifying is simple: One car at a time runs the fastest they can for 2 hot laps (after a warm-up lap) and the fastest average speed is the pole sitter, but…

On road and street courses it gets complicated - The Firestone Fast Six
.

.
Qualifying is done in three segments of TEN MINUTES for the first two and SIX MINUTES for the last. Today, there are 23 cars attempting to qualify. In Segment One, the first 11 cars will be sent out for ten minutes. During that time they will run as fast as they can, being timed. The fastest SIX advance to Segment Two. Then, the 12 remaining cars are sent out for ten minutes to do the same. The fastest SIX from that group also advance to Segment Two. The 11 cars that did NOT advance line up in grid spots P13 through P23, based on their times.

In Segment Two, the 12 that advanced once again run as fast as possible for ten minutes. The fastest 6 of this group advance to Segment Three. The other 6 line up on the grid on spots P7 through P12, based on their times.

Segment Three is also known as The Firestone Fast Six. These cars go out and run as fast as they can for only six minutes and then line up P1 through P6 on the grid, based on their times, and that is how pole is set.

Don’t screw it up! - You have to go as fast as you can but you CANNOT afford to over-cook it: If a car causes a red or full course yellow condition in any segment, the car’s best two timed laps of the segment will be disallowed and that car will not be allowed to advance to the next segment. If a car causes two red or full course yellow conditions in any segment, all segment times shall be voided and the car shall not be permitted to participate in the remainder of qualifying.

Qualifying can be very exciting to watch, as it looks like a very fast race going on, but the cars try to stay separated from each other, so as to get the best possible time without someone mucking up their hot laps. You will see the pole switch SEVERAL TIMES from car to car, as the time runs down.

The pole winner not only gets to start on pole but wins the Verizon P1 Award and the valuable series point that goes with it.

P22 - Max Chilton, Carlin

Row 12

P23 - Gabby Chaves, Harding Racing

.
.
.
Notable:

  • This is Newgy’s 3rd pole of the season. He credits the gear change that the team did to the car during the lull between the Q1 segment and the Q2 segment.

  • The slowest qualifier was predictably rookie Alfonso Celis, but because the the quirks of the FAST SIX group system, he will start ahead of both Max Chilton and Gabby Chaves.

Saturday evening at Road America - The Pirelli World Challenge hold Race 1…

.
It was a dominating WIN in the GT class for Portugal’s Alvaro Parente, driving the big # 9 Bentley Continental GT3 for K-Pax Racing, with Finlander Toni Vilander finishing P2 for R. Ferri Motorsports in the # 61 Ferrari 488 GT3, while Canadian IndyCar driver Scott Hargrove came home P3 in the # 96 Porsche 911 GT3-R for Pfaff Motorsports, after a bad start.

.
Alvaro Parente

.
.
.
Parente used the power of the Bentley up the up-hill front straight at the green flag to sweep past the Ferrari of pole-sitter Daniel Mancinelli for TR3 Racing to take the lead in Turn 1. Also getting past Mancinelli was Vilander. Trying to follow through was Scott Hargrove who also got a great jump. As he and Mancinelli came through Turn 1 side-by-side, Scott got pushed out into the weeds and lost several spots, ending up in P6.

Hargrove began to pick off rivals after the first of three full course cautions. He caught the last one - Mancinelli, again - to take P3 following the third caution, but ran out of time to chase down Vilander.

.
.
.
Notable:

  • While it was good to recover points-paying positions, it was unfortunate for Scott to come home behind Vilander - his better in the overall points standing and his closest rival in the GT standings.

Sunday morning at Road America - USF2000 close out their weekend with a race…

.
Maybe it was cold tires. Maybe it was a cold track. Maybe it was just youthful enthusiasm, but whatever it was, Season Round 7 for USF2000 will be remembered as a crash-fest, with only 14 of the 26 starters finishing the race. Getting his 2nd WIN of the weekend was run-away points leader Kyle Kirkwood for Cape Motorsports. P2 was once again Kaylen Frederick for Pabst Racing and P3 was Lucas Kohl, also for Pabst.
.

Kirkwood - 5th WIN of the season

.
.
.
Rasmus Lindh for Pabst led the crowded field down from pole for the start and immediately Sabre Cook for Team BENIK and Russ McDonough for BN Racing clashed in Turn 1, sending both off and damaged. As the field made their way to Turn 5 two more cars, Max Peichel for ArmsUp Motorsports and Jose Sierra for DEForce Racing clashed before the turn and nosed into the walls. All four drivers were fine but the race went yellow. As the field came around it was Lucas Kohl for Pabst who was leading his teammate, Rasmus with Kaylen Frederick in P3. Lucas had been able to jump past both of them at the start. P4 was Kyle Kirkwood, where he had started.

On the lap 6 restart Kyle passed Kaylen for P3 while Kory Enders for DEForce and Alex Baron for Swan / RJB Motorsports both passed Kyle Dupell for Team Pelfrey for P7 & P8, respectively. As Dupell and Darren Keane for Newman Wachs both entered Canada Corner they touched, sending them both into the walls and bringing out yet another caution.

On the lap 8 restart Julien Van der Watt for Team Pelfrey pulled into the pits with a problem while the field screamed off, with Rasmus still leading. As the field approached Turn 5 Rasmus failed to make the corner and shot off into the run-off, ceding the lead to Lucas. Rasmus would not rejoin. Then, at the top of the hill in Turn 6 Kory Enders and Calvin Ming for Pabst collided with damage, bringing out yet another caution. Also going out was Danial Frost for Exclusive Autosport.

By the time it was all cleaned up there was one lap left - a natural green/white/checker. At the jump Kyle and Lucas battled for the lead all the way to Turn 3 where Kirkwood nosed past. By the time they got to turn 5 Kaylen had enough steam up to also get past the young Brazilian, too, and the 3 motored around to finish - to SURVIVE, is more like it. Alex Baron was able to advance from P10 to P7 on that final lap, though it hardly helps his cause in the title hunt. Kirkwood has a run-away going, now.

.
.
Here is your happy podium - That’s Kaylen Frederick in P2 on the left, Kyle Kirkwood in P1 in the middle and Lucas Kohl in P3 on the right:

Sunday morning at Road America - The lights close out their weekend with a new WINNER!..

.
When the checkered flag flew it was 2017 Pro Mazda Champion Victor Franzoni for Juncos Racing taking an emotional and dominating WIN - his first in the Lights. P2 was Colton Herta for Andretti Autosport and P3 was home-town boy Aaron Telitz for Belardi Auto Racing.

.

.
.
.
.
Pato O’Ward for Andretti Autosport led the field away from pole with a good jump but getting an even better jump was Santiago Urrutia for Belardi, who was able to pass Victor in Turn 1 to take P2 from him. Behind them P4 Colton Herta was being hounded by P5 Aaron Telitz. Telitz would be all over Herta for most of the 1st lap. Dalton Kellet in P7 for Andretti made a move on his teammate, Ryan Norman, and Kellett’s left rear tire grazed Ryan’s front wing, giving the young Canadian a flat. He would have to pit and go a lap down.

On lap 3 the battle for the lead heated up as Santi tried to force the issue in Turn 5. He and Pato pushed each other off the track and left the door open for Victor to run through to the lead going up the hill under the Corvette Bridge. Then instantly Colton Herta arrived to make it a three-way battle between he and Santi and Pato in Turn 7 as Victor took off. Santi swerved off in Turn 8 with obvious damage from his earlier coming together with Pato. He would motor around to pit to get a new front wing and steering arm, and would later rejoin 7 laps down.

For the next several laps Victor maintained and increased his gap up front as Pato fought to keep Colton behind him. Finally on lap 8 Herta was by Pato for P2. It was now a matter of running down Victor. But Franzoni was having none of it and instead showed the form he had showed in testing two weeks ago, increasing his lead with each lap. On lap 18 Aaron Telitz was finally able to catch Pato and took him in Turn 5 for the P3 spot. Two laps later Victor crossed the finish line almost 9 seconds to the better of Herta who was 4.5 seconds ahead of Aaron.

A very popular WIN in the paddock for the young Brazilian.

.
.
.
Notable:

  • Victor was very emotional in Parc Ferme as he had wanted to get a victory dedicated to the late Jeff Green, his Pro Mazda teammate and mentor. He felt he had thrown away the race yesterday so this was sweet redemption.

  • With his P2 Herta just increased his points lead over Pato O’Ward.

Sunday at Road America - Penske perfection on display…

.
The IndyCar race was very fast, with zero cautions, and controlling it for the whole race was pole-sitter Josef Newgarden for Team Penske who never put a wheel wrong on his way to his 3rd WIN of the season. P2 at the end was the guy in his mirrors virtually all day long, Ryan Hunter-Reay for Andretti Autosport, while P3 went to Scott Dixon for Chip Ganassi Racing.

.

.
.
.
One of the most important things that cemented Newgarden’s lead happened on the opening lap, as teammate and P2 starter Will Power quickly faded backwards as the field went down the front straight. He would pit with an engine management bug-a-boo that was never resolved. That handed P2 to Ryan Hunter-Reay before the first corner. Newgarden lead for the first 13 laps and then pitted along with others. Scott Dixon stayed out for two additional laps. They would be the only two laps of the race that Josef was not leading.

The two extra laps for Dixon helped him enormously and took him from his P8 start up into the top group. Eventually, the race settled down up front with Newgarden, Hunter-Reay and Dixon in lock-step one second apart from each other. All the race passing was going on behind that top group and as the track stayed green for the entire race, there were no changes up front, despite near-qualifying lap speeds by the leaders. All three drivers post-race expressed the difficulty they had running at that pace for the whole race.

One of the early front runners was Alexander Rossi for Andretti Autosport but he and teammate Zach Veach both had their front suspension shims loosen during the race, taking away their steering. Both would drop down the order as a result. After getting his shims fixed Veach then went out and set the Fastest Lap of the race. For both he and Rossi it was a case of what might have been.

.
.
.
Notable:

  • The biggest mover was Simon Pagenaud for Team Penske who started P14 and ended P7 - another case of what might have been, had he qualified better.

  • Finishing 4th was Takuma Sato for Rahal Letterman Lanigan from a P7 start, while teammate Graham Rahal was P6 from a P9 start. Robert Wickens both started and finished P5

Three movers, left to right, Takuma Sato, Simon Pagenaud and Graham Rahal

Sunday afternoon at Road America - The Pirelli gang close out the event with their 2nd race…

.
Following the IndyCar race all the Pirelli World Challenge GT division cars came out for their final race to end the great racing weekend. At the start of the race Porsche factory driver Michael Christensen in the # 24 Alegra Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R got the jump on pole-sitter Alvaro Parente in the # 9 K-PAX Racing Bentley Continental GT3 and stayed ahead of the Portuguese driver for the remainder of the race. Taking P3 in the same turn at the same time was Daniel Mancinelli in the # 31 TR3 Racing Ferrari 488 GT3 and he stayed there too, to the end.

.

.
.
Your podium guys, left to right, P1 Michael Christensen, P2 Alvaro Parente and P3 Daniel Mancinelli:

.
.
.
Our guy in the PWC GT class, Scott Hargrove, was gridded in P2 but just as at the start of yesterday’s race, Scott got pushed into the weeds in Turn 1 on the opening lap and it was once again Daniel Mancinelli that did it. This time, however Scott only fell to P4, but he collected a grill full of grass that threatened to overheat his engine in his # 96 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3-R.

The good news was that there was a full course yellow early enough in the event to allow Scott to try to shake most of the grass off the grill. The bad news is that he was not able to advance beyond that P4 spot for the rest of the race. The final good news is that unlike yesterday, he was able the keep championship rival Toni Vilander in the # 61 Ferrari 488 GT3 for R.Ferri Motorsports behind him in P5. That means the weekend was almost a wash in their points battle.

Scott Hargrove (left) and Toni Vilander - still battling for the points lead

.
.
.
Notable:

  • It’s been a great few weeks for Denmark’s Michael Christensen. He gets this WIN following the GTE Pro-class WIN at Le Mans in the # 92 Porsche 911 RSR he shared with Kevin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor.

.
.
.
Points have not yet been awarded but we suspect that Scott will still be leading the GT class and Toni will still be leading the overall, once the points come in. It should still be close. This race was the last event of a great race weekend. THANK YOU, Road America!

.
.
.
The next outings for the Pirelli World Challenge GT classes will be at Portland International Raceway, July 13-15. It will be a Sprint-X event, which is a mini-endurance race, so all cars will have two drivers.
