Indigenous tribe wants Ben & Jerry's to return 'stolen' land their HQ is built on

Not much.

The US conquered the Indians. By the old rules of warfare, they didn’t have to offer them anything.

But they did.
They offered them a treaty and the Lakota accepted.
Then they went back on their “word”.
My word means something; doesn’t yours?

Why are you trying to make this about me? What I said is true … almost everyone lives on land that someone else once claimed was theirs … even the Lakota. Heck, the Dutch bought Manhattan from a group of Indians who didn’t own it … much to the surprise of the Indians who did.

And what I said is true.
The Lakota aren’t fighting to get back land they ceded in the Treaty of 1868.
We took that land “fair and square” via conquest.
The US government broke that Treaty and took the Black Hills which was was allocated to them via that treaty.
I believe in Contract Law. It’s a basic foundation of our country.

The general view, that white men stole land from the indians, is generally the correct one.

Nonetheless

  • the term “Indian giver” comes from the fact that indians were also in the habit going back on their word as well

  • The English got Long Island (and most of the surrounding region) after the natives there, though they had not been aggrieved, joined in a race war attempting to ethnically cleanse white and black people of a tract of land rightfully theirs. The white and black peoples’ crime? Being the wrong race. Having the same race as people who were stealing land elsewhere.

The general view, that white men stole land from the indians, is generally the correct one.
Nonetheless:

  • Vast tracts of land in the US east changed hands specifically because the natives joined the wrong side in the Revolution, (fought for the British) and took no part in the peace agreement of 1783
  • Ditto in the civil war (the indians were slavers), the French and Indian War etc.

The general view, that white men stole land from the Indians, is generally the correct one.
Nonetheless:

  • DNA studies have concluded that the New World was settled in three major waves, the later waves pushing out the earlier one in genocidal race wars. Basically the indians of the American west have the same “we stole it from the natives” claim that the US does.

  • The Shawnee lived on land they stole from the Catawba. The Cherokee lived on land they stole from the Seminole etc… If we are going to restore originalist claims a LOT of native americans have to move back to Siberia and relinquish their stolen land to the earlier groups

One of the problems the Indians had was siding with the British during the revolution.

Many forget that Thanksgiving celebrated a mutual defense pact. Local tribes feared tribes from the north.

Yes, how long before you are considered a “Native”. My family has been here for nearly 400 years. I think that makes me a native American and not european.

Indeed.
Many indians fought for the British and (importantly) took no part of the peace accord. A large portion the eastern states changed hands then.

You’ll have to stand in a long line of people to whom the Federal Government has lied to have your grievance heard.
