The money was so good from it that Prison populations exploded in the South during this time, Black men were arrested for vagrancy and wound up sentenced to years in prison, dying in a coal mine or a lumber mill.

So did white men.

It was a huge thing, for a time. In this same time those statues were going up.

I know, my grandfather worked at a prison farm for a time.

You know, I did read about how Whites were caught up in the Jim Crow net. Not all Whites could read or pay a poll tax, and they lost the right to vote along with basically every Black in the South. They also did wind up on a Convict Lease alongside Blacks, which the program was originally intended for.

I wonder if that drove the poor whites further from the blacks, or gave them a common enemy?

Republicans have worked hard to protect their heritage. Passing state laws disallowing local governments from deciding on their own. I don’t recall you being against those state laws.

It’s a basic guide to spirituality and nothing more. All of the same important stuff happens within, regardless of what book someone reads.

because many citizens honor them …and not as a celebration of slavery either. No monument that I know of celebrates slavery.

I think it’s wrong to use state $ and power to honor traitors who rose up against our government to protect slavery. There is nothing honorable about that.

You want to honor them? Make a shrine in your home. Don’t use tax payer dollars to honor traitors.

That was settled by law and practice long ago. We had elected men who were in a position to issue pardons and amnesties to the confederates. And they did. Neither you nor Black Lives Matter groups get to override those decisions.
