Appreciate the thoughtful, well written post.
I agree with most of your take on my “goals”.
Where I differ is the idea that we are a more individualist society, and the types of social programs would not work well here, is inaccurate.
There is a bit of a myth that America was founded and advanced due to the “rugged individualist” Americans.
The majority of our progress has been accomplished by Americans working together collectively.
We did not become the top economic nation, and the world’s superpower by us not working together.
I also reject the idea t that our diversity is why we cannot do the things you describe, ie… “light socialism”. We already have some light socialism here, and most of those programs are effective and popular. But we can do better.
I think the biggest divide we currently have is not so much the different tribes not getting along…
I think it boils down to the differences between urban areas and rural areas. And that is a complex situation, that can be difficult to navigate what would work for both groups.
I think if we talked to each other, vs talking at each other, we would be able to find common ground. (much like what you and I are doing).
Then again, if one reads the debates and discussions when we were laying the groundwork of the USA, the main argument was the role of government. 200+ years later…we are still debating that.

For the most part, we are still operating under Reagan’s neo-liberal economic policies.
In many ways, Clinton, and Bush 2 made it worse.

No we’re not.
Obama and Biden made it worse, not Clinton or Bush 2.

It’s better to deny the myth than live it.

I agree.
Then stop trying. Nothing is going to “work for both groups”.

I’ve seen that word before. Used by communists in LATAM.
Clinton and mortgage amortization? Clinton damaged the housing market.
