Not long before Jesus died, he and his apostles encountered a man blind since birth. His apostles asked him “Why does God let this man suffer? Is it to punish his sins? Or those of his parents?”
Jesus replied that neither was the case, and said in effect, God allowed this man to suffer to see what, if anything, those around him will do about it.
I’m not smart enough to know if this applies to 1% of illness and suffering, or to 100% of it.
