No, not legally they can’t. The only way to obtain one here and in most states would be to use fraudulent documents.

Absolutely not and didn’t mean to imply that at all… I am suggesting that we should facilitate making is easy (and secure) to always have an accurate voter registration on file. The issue in Texas is the state doing everything they can to make it more likely that when people update or renew their drivers license online less likely that these people will have an accurate voter registration which eliminates them from voting since their ID will not match their drivers license.

When Texas implemented it’s new voter id requirement a few years ago I was required to cast a provisional vote because my license had the appropriate suffix but my registration didn’t have the suffix. I don’t typically use the suffix since my father has been dead for many years.

It’s extremely easy in Texas to register or update your registration without going to the DMV.

What I find missing in the discusssion is the fact that California actually issues two types of Drivers Licenses: Real ID compliant and non-Real ID compliant.

(As noted previously, DMV does not register you to vote, they electronically transmit a request for voter registration which still must be checked prior to the person actually getting registered.)

REAL ID Compliant:
“Provide proof of identity, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, employment authorization document, permanent resident card or foreign passport with an approved form I-94.”

This means that someone does have to show proof of their legal status and provide relevant data, this data can then checked by the voter registration people to determine if someone is legal to register to vote. Since illegal aliens wouldn’t have the proper documentation or proof of legal status, this seems reasonable.

non-REAL ID Compliant:
People applying for a drivers license that is not Real ID compliant can’t apply to register to vote through DMV, they are actually issued a different type of license which is clearly marked as “Federal Limits Apply” meaning that proof of citizenship or legal status WAS NOT provided during the application process.

So, is what you wrote accurate? No, it’s not. Are people “registered to vote” automatically by virtue of getting a driver’s license? No, they’re not.

What is “blocking their way” is the normal voter registration process. Nothing different whatsoever, it’s simply an option to apply, and have the application filled out, still requiring the normal process, docs, and subject to normal verification.

So, in the future, if you write: “People in California are registered to vote when they get a driver’s license!” or similar, you’ll be doing what? That’s right, you’ll be lying.

An individual is not registered to vote at DMV, their application to register to vote is transmitted to the CSOS.

And let me tell you-faxing them info, and folding informational letters and stuffing envelopes in 2006 was a complete and total waste of time, especially on the ancient printing press of a copier/fax machine we had that broke if you looked at it funny.

I always pressed my immediate supervisor/adviser about why we weren’t doing all of wholly using online registration and e-mail, ESPECIALLY given how tech savvy he was. He kept insisting that there enough dinosaurs out there who still wouldn’t get the info if we didn’t do it that way. He finally caved about a year after I left and went full digital.

When fax machines first came out, yes I’m that old, the fax salesman brought one to the office I was working at and trained the office manager how to use it. He had her put the paper in it, dial the number and press send. She was befuddled. The paper simply went from the input tray to the output tray. That confused her and she thought it didn’t work.

You are not registered…you have informed the government that you meet all the requirements to be registered to vote. That, of course, is only if you actually do, since they are going to ask you to provide those documents at the point where you actually attempt to register.

That, for those keeping score, does not equal actually being registered.
