Illinois to take care of it’s roads has decided to double the state fuel tax (to 44 cents a gallon) and increase vehicle registration by $50 a car.

Aimed at raising money to make overdue road improvements across Illinois, the proposed legislation would also more than double the state’s gas tax to 44 cents a gallon and raise the registration fee for standard vehicles to $148, from $98, among other elements.

Now I’m in a rural area, it’s only a mile to work and back, about the same to the grocery store. Just that alone I fill up almost twice a month at 20 gallons or 220 gallons per year. add about another 100 gallons a year for out of town trips. I know people who use double or tripple what I do and have more fuel effecint vehicles.

Now what to do about electric vehicles. You know, same wear and tear on the roads, but they don’t contribue in gas tax. Illinois has come up with a solution:

A proposed hike in Illinois’ annual registration fee for electric vehicles, from $17.50 to $1,000, is being called unfair by current EV owners, and a sales disincentive by manufacturers — just as the new technology is beginning to gain broader traction.

Electric car owners are having a come apart. (another question why are they only paying $20 a year to register when other cars are $100???)

As if 11k in incentives isn’t enough for them to buy, the 1k a year will make them not want to own.

For Skarlatos, a self-employed software developer who bought her Tesla using $7,500 in federal incentives and $4,000 in state incentives, the idea of suddenly having to pay a $1,000 registration fee to own an electric vehicle in Illinois is “unfair,” and would have dissuaded her from an environmentally motivated purchase. The $11,500 in incentives, she said, persuaded her to take the plunge.

Only other alternative I see, electric vehicle owners will have to being in a certified copy of their odometer reading and be charged a per mile fee for road maintenance/construction.

Require that their charging outlets in the home be metered and place a tax on the electricity used to charge the vehicle, and also a tax on electricity used at public charging stations. It would be right on their electric bill. It has the added benefit of people being able to easily calculate how much it is costing them to operate the vehicle.

Let states if they choose to do so tax by any means they deem necessary. I would go for the tires and slowly draw back fuel taxes, leaving diesel as is. The weight of vehicles is what tears up roads.

Out here they raised the gas tax…and roads got worst. So they raised em again and roads still got worst. Now they have toll lane and traffic got worst unless you’re willing to pay about 1.50 per miles using em.

And you wonder why I hate the goverment? I’m sure the road contractors with their politicians in there pocket for no bid contracts are sure enjoying it thou.

I know people that would cheat that in a heartbeat. I have an old cj-7 that I’ve thought about making electric for ■■■■■ and giggles. Not much way to monitor a battery charger. Not to mention the solar charging options.

They did the same here. I warned a republican state congressman friend of mine about the implications of his yes vote to raise the tax. He told me it was better to resurface a road as opposed to grading and resurfacing, and it was critical to get the funds in play before they had to do the latter everywhere. I told him that they should get the corruption out first and then, if needed I would support the tax. Otherwise, it’s just something your opponent is going to hammer you with come re-election time. The drums are beating now…

Yes I suppose that’s true. What I was envisioning was the charger being hardwired into the panel box, but I’ve been in my panel box many times as a homeowner adding a circuit or changing a breaker or what have you.

Nothing wrong with charging some sort of road use tax to electric vehicles somehow in lieu of gas taxes, but there seems to be problems with every idea floated for it. I think the only (reasonably) fair way is by the mile, with some standard valuation of per mile cost that is vehicle specific for the electric motor size. That too is fraught with problems, but at least nobody gets screwed too badly.

What a shame, I can’t drive more than a mile and not see CalTrans hard at work here in California, seems like every other overpass/on-ramp etc… No complaints from me!

Only no bid contracts by UDOT are emergency repairs. By emergency – something that makes the road unusable or dangerous and can be quickly fixed. All the rest are bid. Utah does a weird thing on a lot of them. They do design/build contracts on the larger one’s. They design in stages so the construction starts on the first part while the design is still going on the last part.

Not sure how it works but when I was in Ohio building a house for family member during Obama public work/stimulus work. The road out in front was grind up and repaved. But the problem with that the road was in excellent shape…but it ran through snobsville. Meanwhile the road that goes out to farming community had potholes everywhere…almost enough to swallow my brother jeep I was using. OK maybe not that bad but you get the picture.

Wonder if it’s like here in Utah. State distributes class a,b,c and d road funds to the counties and cities. each class can only be used on certain roads.

They tried to put this on truck drivers…and they staged a traffic slowdown on Good Friday. They drove 45 mph on the expressways, and backed up traffic thru Chicago horribly. Was that the reason they shifted this to car owners?
