is worth? And who’s coin collection is it going to end up in?
Personally I think they should auction it off for charity.

I like the idea of a charity auction.
Where’s Mr. Rogers when you need him?
It is only worth as much as some fool is willing to pay for it. Like most everything else.
They should eliminate the penny as currency when paying cash immediately. If you have pennies, take them to your bank and get cash for them. Get those annoying coins out of circulation.
Interesting…they made 5 of em. Which IMO was a mistake.
The US stopped minting the half cent back in 1857. At that point a penny had the buying power of about $.37 in 2025 dollars.
Logically we should eliminate nickels and dimes as well as pennies. A nickel reportedly costs 14 cents to make, and the melt value is close to 6 cents.
Only quarters and dollar coins are worth bothering with.
I thought dimes were cheaper to make than 10 cents. I’m wrong on that? Regardless, I agree with you. Round up or down, no need for anything less than a quarter.
Yes, dimes cost less than 10 cents, but what can you buy with a dime?
Like I said, I agree with you.
If they eliminate pennies, what will I do with the five pennies in my truck? Polish gold…![]()
I just read that a grocery chain on the east coast will offer 2x in gift cards for pennies today. (Up to $100 in pennies for a $200 gift card.)
Right now the “shortage” is artificial. They were making pennies right up until this week, and all the other pennies that were out there in 2024 are still out there today.
We do agree sometimes. Yay!
We’ll probably fight about which charity. ![]()
What if no one wants them, and everyone just wants to sell them? Then they’re worthless.
Last penny that is ever minted? And we all know some coin collectors are exactly right in the head…they’re fanatics.
And it costs pennies to print a $1 bill. (Less than 5c.) It costs a little more for a $10 or $20 because of the security strip. But still less than 10c.
And, of course, if it’s all electronic, there is no production cost. (Just the interest it adds because it becomes part of the national debt.)
The number of course assumes an even number of minted coins.
I absolutely agree with you. I just can’t see saying with a straight face I bought a penny for 3 million dollars. I don’t care if it was the last, first, or the one in the middle, it’s still a worthless penny. Just like my last ■■■■ won’t be worth anything just because I die moments afterwards. That goes for anyone. But someone will buy that penny.
