Picked up the ebook of Bob Woodward’s Shadow today. It deals with how the Watergate disaster affected the presidents after Nixon. Maybe it’s a bit early, but it might be worth pondering now about Trump and how future presidents will deal with the mess he’s left behind. Certainly, it will be handled differently by the two parties, but I don’t think it’ll be that much different – assuming, of course, we don’t make a mistake again and elect another wingnut idiot in 2020 (if Trump is defeated) or 2024 (if Trump is re-elected). It’ll be a big job to whoever takes it on.
One thing they’ll have to do is try and unify the country. No easy task with the polarization on Capitol Hill and the media. It will take a wise man or woman.
I think Trump and his whole crew will go down for money laundering. At the minimum l predict that future candidates for President will be forced to release their tax returns.
But I’m really wondering how presidents will deal with this. I think the tax return thing is an obvious (and small) fix, but it’s going to take a lot more than that.
If the future president is a Republican, that president will likely deal with it by denying he or she ever supported Trump; by agreeing with many other conservatives and Republicans that Trump was always really a liberal; by asserting that all the responsibility for any problems caused by Trump lies entirely on the liberals and Democrats and RINOs who supported him; that liberals and Democrats had their chance with Trump, but now, it’s time for a true conservative president.
It depends. If we actually get a responsible president after Trump, I imagine that individual will work to get more transparency in the executive and try to have a more unifying tone.
If we get another wingnut (from either party) in the office, the divisiveness from the executive branch will continue and it may be up to Congress to be the adult in the room. Either way, I’m not too optimistic about the future of the republic if this 2nd scenario unravels.
Small fix? Getting the full tax return would take a constitutional amendment. A summary in general wide numbers like other reports might pass court muster. But any state law requiring tax forms as a requirement will be struck down.
