With a handshake and a smile, US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un defied decades of heated, fear-mongering rhetoric between the nations that have technically been at war for nearly 70 years.
The two leaders met in Singapore Monday night at approximately 9PM EST, each greeting the other warmly before Trump and Kim were set to hold a 45-minute long private conversation in a Singapore resort.
“In the first meeting of a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader, Trump and Kim converged at a luxury resort on Singapore’s Sentosa Island, clasping hands as they stood on a red carpet in front of a backdrop of alternating U.S. and North Korean flags. Trump was first to arrive at the summit site, followed by Kim, both readying for the 9 a.m. meeting that culminated dizzying weeks of negotiations over logistics and policy,” writes the Associated Press.
“We are hopeful this summit will have set the conditions for future successful talks,” said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ahead of the historic summit.
