HiFi/Audiophile/Stereo thread (resurrected)

So hey, not much new to report since I’ve been in the middle of a move for the last couple months. While I moved all of 10 houses away it doesn’t make it a whole lot easier…lol.

Only new things I’ve been up to audio wise is I picked up a new to me towers for the kids game room, and they’re impressing the heck out of me for $100 in perfect shape. BIC America DV64’s, they’re only $130 each new at most places, and I can’t believe they can make money on these things at that price. They’re not the best looking speaker but since they’re sealed they don’t have the huge cabinets of my usual faves which are Klipsch, and the cabs are actual real ash, not the vinyl stickers over MDF you usually see in anything less than $500. I am pretty floored at the value these things offer, good choice if you’re wanting to upgrade without breaking the bank.

Still piecing back together my main system in a new listening environment, that’s on hold while I get boxes unpacked and all that. Stupid kids wanting to sleep in beds and all that is slowing me down!

Well ■■■■ you guys then.

So since I just moved, a lot of things are disheveled. For tunage while unpacking I had the aforementioned BIC speakers playing with a Pioneer VSX-D811S receiver., that receiver is a pretty solid unit, a definite upper mid range from the early 2000’s.

It sounds good but since I had 5 Vintage receivers laying about I thought I would do a little informal comparison. Quickly stacked a ‘77 Pioneer SX-780 that I had talked about previously and that BigBear just had resurrected and hooked it up.

YeHhhhhhhh. If sounds pretty good. So much more power. If the newer Pioneer has any advantage it might be a touch more detailed, but the old guy just so much more grunt, even at its modest power rating. Just a lot ballsier, if that’s a word.

Could be the playlist which is a Spotify mix of 70’s music and that’s why it sounds
Better in an old receiver but ■■■■ me. The 811 is still a nice piece but I don’t have any problem handing it off to my 10 year old boy now…lol
