Here is a Tariffs Thread

All that bluster about socialism is just an opening gambit.

But … but why would this be necessary?

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley introduced legislation Monday to provide tariff rebate checks of at least $600 per adult and child to American families, similar to the stimulus checks the government distributed during the Covid pandemic.

Lol.

GOP! The party of government handouts!

Trump said we weren’t going to be taxed and that foreign countries would pay the tariffs. Why do we need handouts if that’s true?

Pfft. You listen to what politicians say? That’s so 2024.

No!!!

I understand they’re wanting to buy votes. But I thought this entire Tariff thing was to lower our deficit and borrowing.

If things go good…buy those votes about this time next year.

Two possiblities

  1. Trump was wrong and at least some significant portion ot the tariffs will be passed on to the American consumer.

  2. Sen Josh Hawley is wrong. He thinks when Walmart sells you a $20 (retail) pair of shoes Walmart paid almost $20 for it so
    — a 15% tariff will be 15% of some almost-$20-price,
    — a 30% will be 15% of some almost-$20-price, etc.
    — etc.
(In which case tariffs would hurt the consumer)

What do you think?
Is Walmart all kind and nice and generous and takes only a teeny tiny little mark-up?

I think you are missing a third.

Hawley has to sell to his Missouri constituency on the possibility of inflation and the way to do it is for a republican to promise a handout.

I wonder why you are missing that third.

See. :upside_down_face:

See what…what are you seeing?

Use government coffers to buy votes. Dems have been doing it forever why not Reps

Reps have also been doing for years. The difference is that they lie about it. (Dems lie about other things)

Oh…so you were seeing honesty.

Yep. I wasn’t criticizing. I was pointing out the actual honest explanation that the poster missed

I know you wasn’t criticizing…Just wanted you to admit Conan is a truth teller.

Personally…I’m still seeing some goods going up. while some stuff dropped others are hitting record prices. And I’m afraid about opening up foreign markets to beef. That’s all we need…more people buying my ■■■■■■■ steaks.

I hope they start fating up more cattle…because it’s ■■■■■■■ getting expansive.

I truly want to eventually get into a rabbit hole of how ranches and farms actually survive and what is actually needed to make sure they do not just today but decades from now (i am not talking about climate or anything like that).

Last couple years they have been slaughtering their herd due to high food cost, interest rates and drought. But that’s not entirely true either.

Yeah things been dry…but also regulations are killing the cattle industry. That and only couple companies are doing most of that slaughtering.

If that is the case, if tariffs cause inflation
then Trump was wrong.
(It isn’t that hard to follow.)

No they don’t have to actually cause inflation. They just have to hurt a constituency of the elected official or even create imaginary pain for the constituency (think creeping shariah ot impending communism)

It’s indeed not that hard. It’s just politics.
