Well I mean it makes sense. From what I remember, Pulse was a gay club. And it got shot the ■■■■ up by a lunatic. Makes sense if a memorial was gonna be done for it would use the rainbow flag motif.
I mean if someone shot up a Synagogue I would expect the memorials to have a Star of David motif in its design.
A rainbow crosswalk in Orlando, Florida, that was part of the city’s Pulse Memorial was painted over by the state late Wednesday night.
The memorial honored the 49 people fatally shot by a gunman at the Pulse LGBTQ nightclub in 2016, in what was the largest mass shooting in the country at the time.
“In this case, while the crosswalk has been restored to its proper form, local efforts are underway to construct a permanent memorial on adjacent properties funded by the State of Florida.”
But why? They were murdered because they were gay. The shooter literally said that’s why he targeted a gay club. I’m not saying a memorial has to be flamboyant or anything, but they should mention the reason they were targeted.
I mean we don’t have to completely shut them out of mind completely. They do exist.
That’s fair enough. It shouldn’t be a cross walk. Cross walks exist to direct foot traffic safely over busy streets.
I do hope they mention why the victims were targeted though with the memorial, though. That’s an important part of the story.
Simple signage at the place it happened would suffice. The town my girlfriend is from has a sign outside of the courthouse that memorializes a slain civil rights worker who was literally beat to death in front of the court house in the early 1960s trying to organize black people to vote in the town. It mentions that he was black, like it needs to.
To exclude that information would be like having a memorial to a lynched black person and not mentioning they were targeted for “existing while black.” Got to credit Purp on that one.
