Hypothetically, there might be some truth to what those Op-Ed website are Op-Eding.
What we know is
Russia launched an offensive. It stalled.
Ukraine launched a counter-offensive. It stalled.
Some previously smart people have jumped to giant conclusions based on that.

The Ukranian war has been a war of attrition since last summer. Western news media have concentrated on territorial gains, which are pretty much irrelevant.
A war of attrition is all about destroying the enemy army and its supplies. Ukraine and its NATO allies are running out of everything at this point, and the likely end result is an eventual collapse as Vlahos describes.

IEDs are only necessary if one does not have access to conventional mines. Ukraine has (apparently) plenty of those, as the Russians have lost numerous armored vehicles on and along the roadways to mines. Ukraineās improvised weapon of choice seems to be mortar rounds dropped on personnel from drones.

A DMZ between Russia and the Polish border is a likely outcome of the war.

Worth more where? Inside Russia?
navigate, sure. But those fields are covered by indirect and direct fire. would we even try it without air cover? No, we wouldnāt. Ukraine is basically using storm shadows and GMLRS in place of air support. Not an easy task.
