Going to war in Nigeria?

The fighting there has progressed to a level II insurgency moving towards a level III. The government has lost effective control over regions of the nation and no longer provides basic safety and security. And it is the population, not the buildings, that need protection. They are attacking the villages that are predominantly Christian. They burn the churches as a symbolic gesture of their perceived superiority.

Nothing wrong with the US doing what they can to stop genocides.

What I do find interesting is Trump supporters are now putting qualifiers on the “no new wars” mantra and then there is the good old fallback on word parsing the word “war”. There was another thread where the usual suspects were parsing the word “new”.

Trump ran on not committing US troops into military action in foreign countries and everytime he talks about doing just that, we have the maga crowd explaining it away.

Me personally, I would have no problem if Trump sent US troops to stop a genocide but regardless it woild make a mockery of his election promise but the faithful wont care.

He could send US troops to fight and die in Ukraine and his supporters would just clap right along.

Yeah…I noticed.

There will never be another decade of occupation in our lifetime.

I think we do not invade. I don’t see how getting involved in a local civil/religious insurrection could do anything but cost us blood and treasure.

So an American firster. I tend to agree…unless possibly it appears a full scale genocide is happening. But then get the approval of congress.

There will be the occasional 5 year and 10 year shows of force, but it will absolutely take a generation of time before we have the stomach to do any shenanigans like that again.

I won’t be young enough to ride the green waves by then. :frowning:

The question that needs to be asked is when will Islamic Militants have killed enough people that don’t worship at the right Mosque? How much blood will be enough for them? If its never enough, when do we stop them?

Christians aren’t the only ones being attacked, but you are correct about the general situation.

Does that justify an invasion and the costly and lengthy occupation afterword?

Of course, almost everybody is, even if their politics don’t agree.

There is more to it than that.

No there is not. That is all there is to it. The war will happen whether or not we choose it. This is not something the US should do alone. The entire world needs to stand up and say… ENOUGH! In the only way they understand

It is sometimes difficult to disucss policy when there is an R in the Whitehouse, or in Congress, or on the east coast or the west coast, or in the heartland anywhere within 1,000 miles of a US border, or . . .

Why?

So far, this thread has been amazingly partisan free.

Islamic jihad is part of the problem, not all of it.

everything else is claptrap. Excuses and rationalizations. Islamic militancy is the root of the problem.
