Hmmm, research engineers discuss velocity in relation to a rate of change outside of solely L/t units. We use it as a shorthand for the first derivative.

Thanks for that post. I’m pretty sure that the denialists just don’t care. They’re too busy asking questions they don’t want the answer to.

Like I said… it’s an understandable metaphor.

But those who say the units are distance over time are correct …

I use the terms “rate of change”, first derivative, slope, d(whatever)dt, or whatever dot when the dependent variable is something other than distance.

If you are looking for “shorthand” , note that “rate of change” has fewer syllables than “velocity”. And if it is temperature you are referring to, “T dot” has only 2 syllables. And “slope” has only one syllable. So you really have no justification to be so sloppy in your speech as to use the term “velocity” when the units are not distance over time.

We are not speaking out loud. We are typing. Velocity takes fewer keystrokes.

Brother, you guys are loony with the tangents today.

Slope takes fewer.

Yeah… not really into consensus “science”.

Dude, step outside your perspective. I work with engineers from every country in the world (ok, not every country but it sure seems like it). People use different terms. They speak different languages. They translate things as they see fit. You syllable theory fails when you consider all these things.

Your sloppiness will bite you someday.

Science doesn’t care.

yes, it is indeed, but you lefties have no useful ideas what to do against
you hysteria cause only just more hot air, accelerating the global warming on that way

Man has contributed to global warming. There is no evidence that man induced it. The Industrial Age occurred after the planet was coming out of the Little Ice Age and the rate of warming up until the mid 70s was essentially the same as the rate of warming prior to the LIA.

Beat me to it.

If I ignore you, I will have complied with your demand that I shut up. That ain’t gunna happen.

Including components of solar panel enclosures and storage battery cases.

I said “most” not all. Do you know how the minerals required to build solar panels are mined and refined?

Then why aren’t we all dead?

You clearly don’t know the difference between “toxic” and “poisonous.” Even Oxygen is toxic to humans. Try living without it.

By the way your exhaled breath is about 4% CO2 … 100 times greater than in the atmosphere. Don’t hold your breath, it might kill you. :stuck_out_tongue:

You are wrong. Velocity is change in position over time. Temperature, no matter that we quantify it on a scale and assign “up” and “down” to changes on that scale, does not have a position to change.

Are we done with this yet?

No it’s not. The numerical value of temperature on a thermometer is NOT a posisition, it is a nomenclature to qntify the magnitude of heat.

Not quite … the rate of change of position. People have a position; cars have a position; planes have a position; sound waves have a position, photons have a position. Temperature does not have a position.

If anybody is hung up it’s you guys. Just use “rate of temperature change (or increase, if you prefer)” and move on.

History.
