Halloween weekend turned deadly in the nation’s third largest city last weekend, with police confirming at least 43 people were shot and five killed in Chicago during the holiday festivities.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, 26 individuals were rushed to the hospital following a series of shootings on Sunday alone; leaving three people dead as the city struggled to cope with spiking levels of homicides.

“Weekend gun violence intensified Sunday, leaving three people dead and 23 others wounded in a 24 hours period,” writes the Times. “The early morning hours were especially violent—wounding 16 and killing two before the sunrise.”

Outgoing Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been harshly criticized from both sides of the political aisle in recent months over his inability to crackdown on escalating gun violence throughout the city; telling reporters communities may have to police themselves.
