French firefighters and first responders miraculously managed to contain the massive blaze that engulfed the Notre Dame Cathedral late Monday evening; as images emerged of the smoldering House of Worship not seen since the widespread European destruction of the Second World War.

“The fire already destroyed the roof of the 850 year old UNESCO world heritage landmark, whose spectacular gothic spire collapsed before the eyes of horrified onlookers on a previously pristine early spring evening,” reports the AFP.
