Thank you.

The FBI issued a subpeona, the newspaper is fighting it. The court will hear both sides and decide. Welcome to America.

There’s obviously a lot on the FBI side of the investigation that we have no clue about.

Blue lives matter… unless they’re federal agents?

So all of our freedoms are now invaded due to the GMEN trying to turn Minority Report into something that’s real?

No, you are part of the problem, frothing about government overreach when you have no clue about what’s going on.

The court will decide since theres obviously a disagreement.

Would you be ok with the gmen having all your information and IP address for you simply participating in this forum? I don’t know how anyone thinks any of this minority report crap is ok!

Correct! Facebook has been doing this for years!

If they had a warrant and were looking for a suspect in a violent crime? Sure.

“What is going on” is irrelevant.

Thank you.

I saw that too.

The same kind of questions swirl when the government wants Apple to unlock a perp’s iPhone. I see the point in it. On the flip side I’m concerned about precedent and expansion of valid causes for breaching each new line-in-the-sand for acceptable causes.

Don’t they already catch child porn consumers by seeing who accesses certain content? I doubt most people bat an eyelash when they report a new ring broken up this way. After all, it’s child porn. But now it’s a news article posted by a major news source. (And why only this one? Yes they must have strong cause to want this.) What news article will I read some day that will put me in the government crosshairs?

Emphasis mine.

You are in no positition to tell anyone what is relevant or not.

Thank you.

It doesn’t seem like the FBI communicated the rationale at all.

“Trust us - we need it” doesn’t seem to me to be a compelling reason, so without additional information, I’m inclined to agree with Gannett’s attorneys’ argument.

“A black man killed an FBI agent, here’s a subpoena for the names of everyone who read a MLK speech on your site on Tuesday.”

I just did, so obviously that’s not true.

Reading a news article on a major news site is now reasonable suspicion. Which will probably be alchemied into “probable cause”.

Far too often (the vast majority of the time) the government starts something, and it just continues to grow beyond its original design.

I would say “always”.

More like, trust us, we need it and a judge agreed, which is why we have this warrant.
