You still knew it could be done. Millions quite literally DON’T, or don’t believe they themselves can do it.
I’ve been saying this stuff for years. ■■■■ I wrote a letter to Bill Clinton telling him to start a parenting mentoring drive of monstrous proportions if he ever wanted to be seen as worth a ■■■■■

I’d say virtually everyone knows that getting a college degree is a good remedy for poverty. Of course there are some who don’t think they can accomplish that. As well as some who probably can’t. Most of the poor people I grew up around chose not to do so, because they didn’t like school. Or didn’t put in the effort, failed and gave up. Most of them had enough IQ to get at least a two year degree. Given how many really stupid people were in my community college classes and still managed to pass, there aren’t very many people who aren’t smart enough. If they are willing to do the work.
Millions. Thing is, they could help themselves if they knew how or believed in themselves enough to give it a serious effort. I’d say most who try do better. Feeding them etc. only prevents them from going hungry (for the most part), it doesn’t help them out of poverty. Most could do it with the right inspiration and training or whatever is needed in each unique situation.
It’s a truly massive undertaking if we are to ever accomplish it. I think perhaps there just aren’t enough people willing to get their hands dirty as it were, to help see it through.

I have to wonder, what would our poverty rate be today absent a million or so mostly impoverished immigrants every year. How do you solve poverty while importing more of it? Not to mention the downward pressure on wages they also cause.

If I’m going to specialize in something…I’d agree…it’s a necessity. The actual foundation for me is what I learned in elementary, middle and high school. I took a class once for an easy grade called “typing” and it’s one of the things that has most served me since. Understanding math, reading and spelling are the foundational bricks that are necessary in almost all jobs. History is beneficial too when considering tearing down statues.
I’ve worked with a lot of illegals, hundreds, and in my experience, they seem mostly self sufficient. Not trying to justify their presence, just saying that they don’t seem like as big a drain as they are made out to be.

I said immigrants, not illegal immigrants.

A considerable portion of the poverty among blacks is a remnant of pre civil rights and the days when it was made as difficult as possible for blacks to own homes or move up the ladder to good paying jobs, build generational wealth, redlining etc. That was unadulterated racism on the face of it. Removing most of the obstacles to success does not instantly lift millions of blacks out of poverty or fix immediately all of the associated problems caused by first being enslaved for a couple of centuries and then forced to live as veritable untouchables for another century after that.
Poverty contributes to a higher death rate from ALL diseases.
Fauci did not say racism CAUSES the higher death rate, he said it contributes, and he did not indicate HOW MUCH it contributes. He is correct.
And why did Fauci make such an inflammatory, misleading and irresponsible comment? What purpose does it serve other than to stoke the flames of racism?
The fact is, when Fauci, majors in anthropology, then, and only then would his opinions regarding the cultural, social and characteristics of an identifiable race, within a specific geographical setting be of some worth. Unfortunately, our Fifth Column Media and their Yellow Journalists are fawning over Fauci’s claim regarding “institutional racism” causing a higher fatality rate among Blacks ____ a subject matter not within Fauci’s expertise.
What freaken purpose, other than stoking the flames of racism, did his comment serve?

Our country is infested with a Fifth Column movement at MSNBC, NEW YORK TIMES, CNN, WASHINGTON POST, ATLANTIC MAGAZINE, New York Daily News, Time, ETC., and their countless Yellow Journalists, who work hand in hand with the Democrat Party socialist/communist leadership to paralyze and destroy our free market, free enterprise system.

Because a lot of people are not aware of that fact or think it’s a lie. They need to be reached somehow, through mentoring or whatever it takes. They literally just don’t know how to lift themselves out of their situation. Not just blacks, but millions of poor people everywhere.
Give it a freaken break. I grew up in East Harlem and the South Bronx, and hung with some very, very bad dudes, mostly Black and Puerto Rican. One think I did learn. Those who decided to buckle down and work, sometimes two jobs, were able to move out of the hood and poverty.
Now, why did Fauci make such an inflammatory comment when his major is not anthropology? What freaken purpose did it serve other than our Fifth Colum media and their Yellow Journalist to be used to stoke the flames of racism?

That’s a theory that doesn’t play out in reality in this country.
“I live in poverty because my parents couldn’t buy a house in that neighborhood”? Here?
It also doesn’t account for the 79% of black people who don’t live in poverty.
People in this country move in and out of poverty relatively regularly based on their decisions and the environment.
There are a few relatively steps to staying out of poverty that have been accessible to all Americans for generations, regardless of race.
Good lord…they are only capitalists in the “for me but not for thee” sense.
Good lord…

It’s not inflammatory. People are snowflakes.

This isn’t how that works. It’s not how anything works at an organizational level.

Stickiness at the ends.
Lack of effort. And it does require effort. The vast majority of people do not stay in poverty, they move in and out of it.

The social programs designed to be a helping hand, have actually helped create this new phenomenon. Maybe this should be reexamined?
Personally…I’d recommend something along a bonus for the family when a child on public assistance gets good grades. I’d like to motivate good behavior vs just financing and encouraging poor behavior.
This is a great idea, in my opinion. Free school lunches/breakfast is also important.
It’s a great thing that the vast majority of people do not stay in poverty. There is still stickiness at the ends.

Not the same individuals.
It’s a generational phenomena at the ends of the wealth spectrum.
