There are two separate issues involved here.

One issue is what relevance this might have on whether gender flexible restrooms are a good idea or a bad idea.

Second issue is extent to which woke institutions went to cover up this incident for fear of how it would interfere with their approach to issue one and how woke institutions vilified the victims (Scott family) and misrepresented the incident at the school board to make it seem different than reality. These institutions included the school, school board , the national school board organization, NBC and ultimately the DOJ got involved.

It’s the second issue that makes this a national issue.

You can take any approach on the first issue and still recognize the problems with those misrepresenting the truth.

A male, claiming to be “gender fluid” went into the female restroom, dressed as a female, both of which are allowed by policy forced by wokism. And raped a girl.

Which is exactly what progs were told was going to happen.

That is what reportedly happened.
