Explain it like I'm 5: What benefits will I be seeing when net neutrality ends next month?

I’m sure if getting rid of net neutrality was a Democratic Party idea, the Forgotten Man would be screaming from the rooftops about having to pay more.

It shouldn’t be a partisan issue. We could take a lot of notes from S. Korea, where the government treats the internet as a public good, instead of solely a means for making a buck.

With net neutrality Comcast is free to charge more to customers who use more bandwidth. The problem is they also want to extract monopoly rents from services like Netflix that their customers use. They want to be paid twice for the same data.

People always say MAGA refers to the 1950s but I guess some Trumpists actually prefer the Gilded Age. Cool.

Hey, maybe we’d actually be better off if Trump fans started consuming unpasteurized milk and eggs. I hear Big Gubmint is always worse than Freedom! no matter the cost.

I’m referring to technology or innovation at any level

It means you’re going to pay more

we had a thread about this years ago and it was huge. by the end of the thread people STILL didn’t know the issues or what NN is. it was depressing.

Most people don’t understand or care about net neutrality, but maybe they’ll look into it when their bill goes up or their service changes or both.

We already buy speed and bandwidth packages too. They are already capable of offering throttled packages. It’s just now they can bend you over because you watch Netflix and shake you down for an extra $5 a month

I may or may not be ok with it. But just because the federal government got its fingers into some things whether I’m OK with it or not - does not mean I have to accept the federal government controlling everything… especially stuff that does not make life and death differences.

this reminds me of that town major in alabama who recently was complaining about Trump’s EPA and it relaxing rules for coal ash ponds (since their town had had multiple issues/spills into their water). i researched their county…

  • Predominantly white
  • Poorer
  • Voted heavily for Trump

They basically shot themselves in their own feet.

libs… you could not care less what I pay.

What are your REAL reasons for wanting “net neutrality” ? No more fake reasons.

^ see what i mean. here we are at the point when NN is ending and people are still trying to figure out what it is.

Its because they don’t want to know. But you can bet your butt they will be the first ones to b****h When the costs of services they use go up. And the funny thing is the cord cutting phenomenon that has been going on for several years, those are the groups of people who will be hit the hardest. Netflix, Hulu, Prime, etc.

Rinse and repeat on a whole host of issues. They are always shooting themselves in the foot.

I’m sure I probably read a lot of it too.

I try to keep in mind the research showing that people choose parties and vote based on identity and determine issue positions from there so this is mostly a waste of time but it’s hard.

You are right, I don’t care anymore, because for reasons I can’t fathom, R’s always are in favor of things that are not in their economic interest.

I used to care much more about the Forgotten Man, but I’m in the “reap what you sow” camp now.

its expiration will be an opportunity for someone if the hair-on-fire lib fearmongering comes true. Choose your tech stocks wisely.

You libs don’t have a first grasp on where we are with technology. The alternatives to the status quo internet industry only need a little nudge to blossom again. Nudge? What causes nudges? Needs? Unmet needs. Necessity. Did I mention … she’s pregnant? John-Boy Invention will have a brother.

As with all socialistic concepts, the proponents of these concepts think of people as cows… cows that are happy when they are contented … fat contented cows … who get everything they want. And when they get their happy box of community bread, sausage, and internet they are easy to control. And ironically THEY… the socialists … will even turn to their supposed nemesis, economic fascism, to enforce their methods. Economic fascist methods - operational control by the government that has every authority of ownership - will help socialists create the appearance of achieving their goals. ( But in reality, the “people” still own nothing because the government takes their money to pay for the effort of forcing the goals of socialists.) Contented cows. Chewing the cud, happy gettin’ the data juuuust the way they like it.
