Then expect things to only get worse.

In LA County alone there are 70,000 homeless
A media home in LA county costs $850,000 at ten people per home
thatâs $600 million for LA county alone
- more in counties all over the US
- more each year
- more when anyone with a rent problem demands âI am homeless gimme by free house!!â
No freaking way.

Recondition and Reopen all the former State Hospitals.
Best thing that could happen. Great Health Care and a Supportive environment while having necessary control over residents. Rekindle actual mental and physical care. Reduce the residents stress and offer the most dignity and education.

You think weâre buying real estate to find homes for the homeless?

I am just using that as an expense comparison.
As for homeless shelters . . . on good weather days there are empty beds in most of them. Homeless people tend to be ummm⌠âdefensiveâ and many (not all) would rather be homeless than live in close quarters with others. Others, return night after night to the same one-night shelter for 20 years, and pan handle by day. no kidding.

Definitely a case of âteach them to fish.â
You said youâve done a lot of work with the homeless, so Iâm not gonna step on your toes. Thatâs a commendable pursuit. So thank you. Iâm sure it would cost way more than 20 billion but when compared to other expenditures in this country, itâs a way better use of money, imo anyway.

hat tip
there is a lot more than can be done.
The libs have it right:
I have worked with a lot of recent ex-cons (mostly small time crimes related to drug addiction) an seriously . . . a person cannot see what I have seen without thinking âJust a little transitional support their first months out of jail would goa LONG way toward preenting relapse.â
The cons are right:
Actual drug rehab are tremendously expensive and a LOT of those bed spaces are full whht homeless people who donât really want to get clean and have no intention of trying. They just want a vacation from homelessness, a summer of air conditioning etc⌠We don;t need to spend more on rehabs, we need to screen the patients better and punish the frauds.

A lot of homeless People that just cannot live âin the communityâ for mental, physical and penal reasons. Some people need isolation and restraint. Some need major chemical straight-jackets.
Today they are around bad street drugs and that makes it worse. Put them in State Hospitalâitâs the only merciful decision.
Itâs cost HAS to be paid, directly to all hospital services and staffing⌠Politicians canât have access to it.
Expect $150,000 per patient, per year to pay for care.
Too bad.
Itâs called âGovernment Servicesâ

yes someting like that.
I definitely believe the estimates that 85% of the long term homeless are addicts or mentally ill or both and a lot are so ummmm âoverly defensiveâ that they are damn near impossible to helpf except in the extreme short term.
But free housing for eveyon is just too expensive and âmore shelter bedsâ whihc defintiely sould be done in some towns, will not produce a noticeable overall difference. Many of the homeless you see on the street everyday sleep in the woods next to walmart when the weather is nice, and the shelter near the church when the weather is bad. Providing twice as many shelters near the church wonât change the overall picture.

Take a bus ride with 20 patients with schizophrenia, Bi-polar, Developmentally Disabled, feeble-mindedness. Prone to violent outbursts. Teach them to fish. Use rubber fish hooks and M&Mâs bait.
Bring 5 to 1 staffing.
You need a bigger bus.
Large Acreage, Many Units, the State Hospital model was already proven to work. Now itâs desperate. No reinventing the wheel is necessary.

Oof. Okay, but first we need to have a serious conversation around involuntary committal.

That conversation was already DONE.
Get politicians and lawyers away from it as much as possible.

What you are referring to is the âSMIâ (severely mentally ill)
There certainly are a lot of SMI among the homeless but by âa lotâ I mean 5% more if you count autism and downs.
There are a lot of resources currently available for such people
- if they find an advocate (like a social worker) to get them in the system
- and if they choose to keep accepting it.
America DOES have a welfare safety net, monthly disability checks, public housing, section 8 housing, medicaid etc. and people with SMI automatically qualify.
If you ever watched a movie that told you âPeople are thrown out of mental hospitals and have nowhere to go and are homeless because there is nothing there for himâ you were lied to. Believing the lie does not help anyone.
I wasnât there. Iâll take your word for it, but I reserve the right to object.

I donât have to âwatch a movieâ I know the revolving door of useless community services is not ever going to work. It never did work. It doesnât work. This pendulum has to stop.
Get the real numbers of patients dumped from state hospitals onto the street in the 1990âs. Also the patients in the hospital werenât only âsevereâ. High functioning psychopaths can live in the Penal Units hospitals.
There was a regular percentage of the society who were Institutionalized residentsâmany thousands in every State, always. The ârehabâ model âdifferent from Mental Hospital modelâ needs to change as well. The revolving door is useless.
Other countries emptying their prisons and assisting them to illegally migrate to the USA has made it far worse. Remove them from our country.
The redundancy of wasted thinking about this has to stop. The near perfect system was already there when corrupt politicians and hairbrained ideologues destroyed it.
Copy that success the Mental Hospital/Developmental Center already had developed, before it was cruelly torn apart because of greed and stupidity
Can you name a single lib policy that makes people homeless?
