EPA is now allowing asbestos back into manufacturing

"Though the EPA is easing its regulations against using harmful toxins like asbestos, it will largely be the responsibility of local and state governments, as well as companies and informed consumers to counter these federal moves. Walsh says it’s up to sustainable building-product manufacturers and ultimately, architects to pressure the market.

“Architects really set the pace of design, in terms of aesthetics and materials that we like,” he said. “If they start to incorporate health-based criteria into their palette, it could really have an influence on what the manufacturers produce.”

“The U.S. is one of the only developed nations in the world that has placed significant restrictions on the substance without banning it completely.”

Here’s a pic of a “working man” with incurable mesothelioma…

I guess our country is gonna do a whole lot of stuff like this before the Trump Administration is gone. Just pray the fear of lawsuits keeps those dangerous items out of your homes/etc.

You got to be ■■■■■■■ kidding me.

hey, who knows, maybe it could save some manufacturers a penny per pipe made and they sell a million per year. isn’t a few worker’s health worth a million dollars?

Nothing wrong with using in say brake pads provided it is handled with proper precautions on the manufacturing and repair side. The problem is prolonged exposure breathing it, that doesn’t make it unfit for every use. The main issue was people not knowing breathing it was a hazard, now they do so proper precautions can be taken when it is present, like wetting or enclosing brake assemblies while servicing as required under current OSHA rules.

Oh and it was legal to make them under the old rules too, why did Obama want to kill people with asbestos?

You guys want to ban every substance that you shouldn’t breathe or what?

This is not even in the United States. He admits to tearing it up with his own hands.

He did not work with asbestos all the time, but when he did, he and colleagues would “cut it, or rip it up with our hands.”

I don’t read that that asbestos will be declared “safe”… only that the federal government is getting its nose out of the business.

look at the bright side. those mesothelioma lawyers will be making a killing in about 40 years.

No we’re not. We arnt going back to the old days where it was handled as freely as the guy in your picture did.

But keep up the fear mongering. CentGov* thanks you.

(* Credit to whoever came up with this term)

What? No answer to my question? Should the government place an absolute ban on every single substance it is not a good idea to breath or not?

George Wallace used the term Central Government 8 times in his speech at the doors of the Univerisity of Alabama while denying two black kids in. That’s when it really took off. So thank him. Or maybe the guys who shortened it.

But this is business the government should have it’s nose in. Companies should not be allowed to poison their employees or us for profit. We need a strong EPA, FDA, OSHA and any other agency whose mission is to protect us from poisons.

So what? You think they removed every regulation surrounding asbestos?

By the way, you should maybe have broadened your search a bit, if you had you might have found this.

From https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-takes-three-important-steps-ensure-chemical-safety-under-lautenberg-act-proposes

  1. a significant new use rule (SNUR) proposal enabling the Agency to prevent new uses of asbestos – the first such action on asbestos ever proposed.

For asbestos, EPA is proposing a SNUR for certain uses of asbestos (including asbestos-containing goods) that would require manufacturers and importers to receive EPA approval before starting or resuming manufacturing, and importing or processing of asbestos. This review process would provide EPA with the opportunity to evaluate the intended use of asbestos and, when necessary, take action to prohibit or limit the use. Read the document. Comments are due in 60 days upon publication in the Federal Register (Docket: EPA-HQ-OPPT-2018-0159).

Doesn’t sound at all like what your links are claiming does it?

come on man. american business has proved time and again that they won’t harm people/workers/employees for profit. it’s not like we’re the only developed nation that hasn’t banned the stuff or anything.

i’m starting to think there were more secret meetings we haven’t heard about. a bunch of CEOs and Trump probably sitting around and talking about how they’re gonna reverse as much safety stuff has humanly possible to increase profit/income.

I agree … but that job was left to the states.
Even if efficiency trumped freedom and justified abandoning the Constitution, the federal government has never shown itself to be efficient.

In essence, what they just did was to ban any new use or import of products that contain asbestos without their evaluating the safety of the product. Not sure what you are complaining about. Did you not realize asbestos wasn’t banned? And again, should we ban every substance you shouldn’t breath?

We’d have to ban gasoline and diesel in that situation. Which would take us back to horse and buggy. And then We would be surrounded by horse fecal matter and it’s only a matter of time before disease ravages the population.

Wait! Are you one of those attorneys we see on TV advertising for Meso cases?
That can’t be true.

Ill give you one guess as to who is the largest providor of asbestos now.

Koch brothers?
