By how many times your electric meter spins in a month’s time. Web servers are small potatoes compared to bit coin mines.

No kidding. Crypto miners have been screwing us gamers over for a few years now buying the high power graphics cards driving the cost of us that want to sword and board through the roof.

Kw/H would tell you, the average web server may use 400 KwH per year where a good crypto set up, at least 1440KwH a month. If you are getting paid for mining in crypto, you may owe taxes on the income and should be reported.

If I was to actually get paid for crypto mining in my basement, I would definitely report it.

Again, folding@home (and other DC projects) use similar amounts of electricity as crypto mining. I have friends who set up 20 computers in their basements running such projects (they have big hearts and want to help cure stuff like cancer). How do you tell the difference between someone doing folding@home, from mining crypto?

In fact, as a protest, I offer the following: The hannity community start a folding@home team. We can burn similar amounts of electricity for a good cause and put up our middle fingers to the Biden administration.

I havent seen crypto mining characterized that way. I am not saying its wrong. I just admit i am intrigued at the perspective. The documentaries i have seen about it have romanticized it.

Could be crypto mining. Could be a bulk email operation. Could be doing DC projects. Could be a web server.

Probably first through power usage, charged with tax evasion, then subpoenas of your servers to prove the assertion.

That is one of the oft-discussed consequences of smart meters, yes.

Because they measure at a far higher granularity (sample rate) it is relatively easy to identify the use of electric ovens, kettles, refrigerators etc. The consumption of a computer is likely to be steady over a lengthy period - even continuous if it is never switched off. Heaters of any kind tend to have a duty cycle in several minutes because most thermostats are on-off controls; and TVs tend not to be on much outside peak viewing periods.

One justification is to offer you advice - such as putting computers on standby when not actively in use - t o save you money.
