Either the MAGA wing will be satisfied with enough concessions or I have a feeling McCarthy will just wait for a few democrats to call in sick or not get to the floor and he’ll achieve enough votes. Doesn’t have to be 218, just a plurality.
I actually think a few centrist Democrats may sit out the vote, preferring the devil they know (McCarthy) to whatever lunatic might get the job if he doesn’t get elected.
They might not like McCarthy. They would like Gaetz, Gosar, MTG, etc. a lot less.
Quite possible. They would have to get away with lying about it (being sick, mama has surgery) or incur the wrath of the party leadership. Or perhaps the voters.
What moderate democrats?
What would be a hoot is for the DEMs to get a vote on Jefferies and then have 10 centrist GOP vote him in.

It would be up to them to decide which moderate democrats to work with. I’m obviously not elected to the House, and would therefore have no input in that decision.
Yeah thats in my .01 % chance category, just above Trump being chosen as the House Speaker. 
So I assume that McCarthy knows if he can win at this point. And if he can’t I imagine theres no way to postpone the vote? Does anyone know what happens next? @Safiel ?

Man, f the GOP can’ get their act together and select a Speaker in at least the first few votes, they are going to be a laughing stock for the next 2 years. They finally get the House, and then they can’t even do something so simple as to elect a Speaker.
I wouldn’t expect anything else to get done legislatively for this term if they can’t even figure this out.
The gas is out of the MAGA can. I don’t think even a 2 year Hunter-palooza investigation is gonna bring back the magic.
Why not someone like Gaetz then if McCarthy is this unpalatable ? Assuming he wants to be speaker, of course.

Don’t have to really like him to vote for him especially if a basic function like speakership is in question.
He’s also a bomb throwing MAGA radical that only wants a House with a scorched earth policy. Most of the GOP House don’t want any part of that.
We need MTG more now than ever! Aside from Hunter, what else could be more important than an investigation into Jewish Space Lasers.
Looks like he’s still 7 votes shy. Looks like this will go to a second ballot but I don’t see what would change.
I understand the distaste for someone like him ; just not the distaste to the point where they’d throw away the ability to govern a major government branch because of it.
Abstaining votes don’t count against the total members present in subsequent votes.
