Does Harris having a great-great-great grandfather being a slave owner raise any concerns?

Well, here we are again. There’s probably no more obvious example of white privilege than white people going around definining who is really black and who isn’t.

Obama isn’t black, he’s half white.

Harris isn’t black, she’s blah blah blah.

Ethnically and culturally, they are black.

Keep going on about percentages and all that. It’s a great look.

No one thinks someone shouldn’t be President because their greatx3 grandparents owned slaves. Very definition of a strawman.

Cons tried to launder their racism through the media with “birther” stuff before and it did not work out so good. Not sure why it’s being tried again.

Go with the “she isn’t really black” thing.

That is also a winner.

It’s very 1800’s to be debating percentages of blackness.

Natural Born citizen, yes
“Black”. There’s a possibility her Jamaican ancestor(s) could have been Arawak or island Caribs. Neither are “Black” and without documentation or DNA analysis connecting Harris to a “raped African slave”, one could (gratuitously) assert Harris is not “Black” and be somewhat correct. No? Harris’ mother is Eastern Indo, also not Black. Harris should simply use the identity politics catch all nomenclature “woman of color”. It’s a parachute that will cover her arse should she be rebuked somehow for identifying herself as an “African or Black American” all these years and facts prove otherwise.
But Kamala Harris has publicly pushed the “reparations” narrative. Surely she expects someone to be held accountable for the enslavement Africans? Including herself?

Slightly off topic here, but the overwhelming number of slaves “owned” by freed blacks back then were purchased because they were family members that they freed. So, yes, they bought slaves but they were also family, for the most part.

More on topic, Harris’ ancestors were more than likely raped and impregnated by a slave owner. Technically, that makes the slave owner her ancestor as well, but that isn’t a winning argument to say that makes her culpable for his sin or lessens her stature as an African American.

She is a Black American.

What concerns me is her most liberal senator in the US senate (even ahead of Bernie) rating according to Govtrack which is a nonpartisan organization which tracks bills in congress.

Being a Black American is not necessarily the same thing as “African American”. Descendant of slaves is not a requirement. What your great grandfather did is not relevant.

Being black in America is about your place in which segment of society.

Yeah Joey B “you ain’t black” , acceptable.

It’s not.

It was stupid.

This line of attack is really working hard to eclipse that stupidity.

Indeed. Good post.

Good post.

Harris is not responsible for what any of her ancestors did. What? Is she supposed to pay reparations?

Exactly, that line of thinking does not seem to work in reverse. There are all kinds of voices about white people this white people that. All shades of non white skin color defining what white people are and are not. All white people lumped into one pot regardless of their heritage or genealogy.

i guess they don’t teach American history in Canada.

The slave owner she is supposedly descended from was not Black.

where do you see anything in there about this being her ancestor? not saying its not, i just don’t see it

I think all this stuff is ridiculous judging people on what their great and great great grandparents did has always been off-limits in our society just like going after the children of political rivals.

Up until yesterday it has always been wrong to judge the child the for the sins of their parents. Harris like the rest of us doesn’t have a time machine to go back and try to talk with their great great great grandparents for something they did wrong.

The fact that some are doing this now, and even worse encouraged by some in society is bad and will not lead to anything good.

HA! My mother’s family name is Brown. The Browns of Fayette County PA. Documents show the Browns circulating around South Union and George’s Twp around 1740 holding an English Land Grant.
Could there be a …?
