Do progressives believe in civil liberties?

Yeah, they be like that sometimes. They don’t know the difference between liberty and freedom either.

■■■■ definition.

perhaps we should engage a discussion concerning the value of civil liberties in a modern context.

That sounds too much like work.

Let’s just spout off our preconceived beliefs and nothing more.

Then yes, I believe in every single one of those.

A liberty and a freedom are not the same thing.

That’s better.

Preconceived beliefs are the way to go, baby!

I was just using his definition. If you have a different one, I will offer my thoughts around how much of it I agree with.

Then, how do you rationalize the actions of spying on apolitical opponent and closing the economy?

The first one @bootz posted.

I posted three.

but if freedom is not liberty and liberty is not freedom what do they have in common and what separates them?

OK I’ve had my fun…now I’ll play along.

Why should one take precedence over the other?

And I said the first one.

Liberty is to - a permission given by an authority. It can be revoked on a whim. It is the government allowing you.

Freedom is from government authority. It is the government prohibited from interfering.

Liberty - you are allowed to based on authority

Freedom - the entity has no authority to interfere.

Good question. I’ll wait a bit.

Quick answer the Constitution.

but lets say there never was a constitution or private property. Would the world be a better place?

We’ve had the Constitution for over 200 years and yet the question has not been answered.

So no, the Constitution does not say what should take precedence or why.

How are individual liberties and community not of equal priority?

Well, that depends on which Constitution.

Who determines what is in the best interest of the community?

There’s only one.

The one written on paper.

The one that was a result of many many compromises.
