In the interest of full transparency I am horrific at any time of home maintenance. Seriously I suck but over the past year I have taught myself a few things but overall I am envious of those of you who have a garage full of tools, ready and able to tackle any job.
Earlier this week I dug out a huge mound of earth that had piled up down the side of my house. For about 5 years I had a rubbish bin sat there full of soil and brush from my garden, over time the bin rotted away and left a huge mound of earth that was grown over.
I moved my two bins onto the area and then thought it would look much nicer if I put down a couple of paving slabs. But over time I suspect they will start to become uneven and look crappy. So my question is whats the easiest way to put down 6 or so paving slabs at the side of my house to stand my bins on so that over time the slabs dont sink into the ground. Or am I just overthinking the whole project?
Dig the area out. Rent a vibrating packer to pack the soil down. Lay down some landscape fabric. Build a frame around the area with boards on edge. make sure the tops of the boards are level. Make a screeding board that will run on the frame and extend down into the area to the level you want the bottom of the pavers to be. fill the area with sand, screed it level, pack it down with the vibrating packet. Repeat until the packed sand is at the level you want and won’t pack down any more. Lay out your pavers. Run the packed over them. After the pavers are set, sweep sand over them to fill any gaps. Pack it again. remove the frame.
Ha thanks. I appreciated Koushi’s advice but at the weekend it turned out to be way beyond me. So new plan. Dousing the small area with enough chemicals to eradicate plant life for 100 years, then some thick plastic sheeting down to make sure anything that did survive cannot grow up. Followed by sand compacted down hard then my paving slabs on top.
