Total Encounters: More than 10.8 million nationwide encounters recorded by CBP from February 2021 through the end of FY 2024. This number includes individuals encountered more than once, particularly while the Title 42 expulsion policy was active.
“Gotaways”: Nearly 2 million “known gotaways” (migrants detected but not apprehended) evaded Border Patrol between January 2021 and May 2024.
Individuals Released into the U.S.: Analysis from the Migration Policy Institute indicates that approximately 5.8 million asylum seekers and other migrants were paroled in or otherwise allowed into the U.S. to pursue their immigration cases during the Biden administration’s four years in office.
Deportations and Expulsions: The Biden administration has conducted over 4.4 million repatriations (deportations and expulsions), including 2.5 million Title 42 expulsions.
So! Let’s do the math. Total encounters is tough because many were repeat visitors. But, we know they allowed 5.8 million asylum seekers in and 2 million slipped across the border as illegal immigrants. That is 7.8 million people total. But they also expulsed 4.4 million people, which means the net gain was roughly 3.5 million more immigrants at the end of his term rather than at the beginning. Still a lot of people but certainly not 20 million people.
