Destroyer damaged in deadly 2017 accident returns to sea

The USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) put out to sea in the Gulf of Mexico for fitting out and shakedown following 2 1/2 years of repairs. It had been critically damaged on June 17, 2017 in a collision with the MV ACX Crystal.

There had been much damage both below and above the waterline and it was necessary to completely replace much of the superstructure.

Whether things actually work the way they should will be determined during the shakedown cruise.
