I’m guessing you said that at some point you changed from FAIL to WORKS. So a machine will fail even with no use, just depends on the time. Now apply a normal distribution about that time and you get failures over a range of times.

The less moving parts the better, I’d imagine. But consider the loads over time. Temperature extremes, temperature cycles, humidity changes, pressure changes… plus there is just the randomness of nature.

Are you on the Trump “I really won” legal team, or is this a cover letter for such resume?

Not to rudely interject on what appears to by an intricate engineering argument…but.

A. We’re not talking about a complex piece of electronic instrumentation. Hell, it’s not even as complex as a spectrum analyzer.

B. We’re talking about a digital abicus that (should have) been designed for long periods of non use between high volume demand.

C. If these machines are incapable of living up to the megar parameters set forth in B…why the hell are we depending on them in choosing “leadership”?

Once a machine has been calibrated, setup, configured and shut down it WILL keep said settings.

Machines/robots are used precisely for reasons previously stated…repeatability of said process, repeatability of results, especially when used for optical scanning operations.

Have not graduated yet, but will be a Manufacturing Engineer.

Also have spent the majority of the last 15 years in IT working with engineers, mostly in manufacturing environments so I can say with confidence that again once a machine is configured, software settings applied, and manual settings set that once a machine has been configured as above and shut down properly, when powered up 99.9% of the time after post startup testing is done the machine WILL retain all settings. There is no absolute and you know that so your little “gotcha” attempt falls flat.

Why do you think manufacturing has gone to robotics and machines…easy answer is again…repeatability, especially with optical scanner systems. Unless someone bumps the scanner eye it will consistently scan correctly time after time after time.

You are assuming a lot, the biggest being perfect storage.

I don’t doubt that a piece of equipment will retain their settings. It is more about whether the equipment is in spec during subsequent operation. Settings do not guarantee spec.

Most of our lab equipment requires yearly calibration, which doesn’t mean it falls out during that time.

If specs don’t change, and the previous settings were in spec they should be good to go. IF specs change then yes the machine would need recalibrate to be back in spec.

Lab equipment is MUCH more sensitive and specs are often much tighter.
A simple optical scanner should not need adjusted on power up if it was in spec when shut down.
The caveat to that would be if the scanner was knocked around while powered down.

I’m not familiar with the complexities of voting machinery. But of the thousands of voting machines, I’m pretty sure some have been roughly handled. I agree the vast majority stay within spec. As you mentioned, 99.9% are fine, but that still would leave one out of a thousand.

Btw, I had a graduate class in Reliability where we did a lot of the math for sampling schemes.
