Roosevelt tried to pack the Supreme Court in 1937. Republicans gained 81 seats in the House and 8 in the Senate in 1938.
Nowadays Democrats are saying they will pack the Supreme Court and Senate if they win, and they are promising more violence if they lose. Yet they claim that Trump is a dictator and a threat to democracy and rule of law.
The more Democrats threaten the basic institutions of America, the more they guarantee a Republican victory. Anarchy and one-party dictatorships are not popular outside a few leftist enclaves.
Indeed, Nadler has said if Republicans go forward with this he will be for packing the court. To do that Democrats have to take the Presidency and the Senate. If Biden wins the Presidency (spit) but Republicans keep the Senate, McConnell should keep a quote of Nadler on the Senate walls at all times to remind them of what they owe Democrats when Biden comes up with a nominee.
Forgive them, even fervent dems have a hard time going as far left as activists and leadership. Probably why they are so hostile, they know they are on the wrong side. IMO
Thanks for the link. And why would not the Democrats do this? I think that they are pretty confident at this point that they will flip the Senate and take the WH and add to their majority in the Senate. And their goal will be to off-set the two (maybe three) appointments that Trump got. And they will be in a postion of power to do it. Agree?
We shall see if they are in a position to do this. In order for it to work, Democrats would have to take not only the Presidency but the Senate as well. If they take the Presidency but not the Senate, their threat is waterā¦and helps set the tone for Bidenās term.
Court packing only had a very minor role in that election.
The failure of the New Deal, as demonstrated by the severe recession of 1937 to 1938 was overwhelmingly responsible for Democratic losses.
And it is also important to consider that Republicans had been crucified in the elections of 1930, 1932, 1934 & 1936. In the 75th Congress, elected in 1936, Democrats held a 346 to 89 majority in the House and an 80 to 16 majority in the Senate. Being that overextended, it was inevitable that the Democrats would lose a large amount of seats once the tide finally turned.
The court packing bill had only a very minor role. The recession and the over-extension of Democrats in Congress led to their great losses in 1938.
Thank youā¦I remember talking/discussing this back then. Just like āsomeā have discuss Clarence Thomas to retire before Trump final 4 years are up.
But make no mistakes. If we lose the senate and Trump winsā¦there will not be another bench seat filled under his administration unless we win back the senate in 2022.
Now here is Ginsberg saying she doesnāt think itās smart move to be packing the courtsā¦it will look and act as nothing more then another political branch.
