A cousin of mine whose wife was employed by the US State Dept stationed in Rome both raved about the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale a universal health coverage to citizens and residents with public healthcare largely free of charge. My daughter was educated for a time in Florence and was issued a SSN card for a fee (mandatory for any non-citizens staying in country for a period of time). Farmacia costs are minimum or free. Model single payer system doncha think?
Sounds so good my cugino, a retired DOD employee with that fantastic federal pension and benefits for life package, came back to America for a knee replacement. He said the wait time for an orthopedic surgeon and hospital stay was nearly 2 months (minimum)!
Just an observation in light of the CV-19 outbreak in Italy, it’s been said the mortality rate in Italy could be because of the large percentage of the population are elderly and those over 80 are being bypassed to save younger patients. Guessing socialized medicine has it’s downside?
