Despite years of low crime rates and rising rents, New York City is seeing a major spike in murders and rapes in the beginning months of 2019; raising serious questions over safety and security in the nation’s largest city.

“The NYPD and Mayor de Blasio have boasted about a continued drop in crime citywide, but a closer look at those numbers finds a disturbing trend being masked by an overall lower crime rate,” reports CBS New York.

Newly released statistics from the NYPD show murder rates up 50% from the same period last year, and reported rapes also rising a stunning 23%.

“A deeper dive into those statistics find that misdemeanor sex crimes have skyrocketed in 2019, going from 459 in 2018 to 580 through the same point in 2019. That’s an increase of over 26 percent,” adds the report.
