Well into next year. Even if a vaccine becomes available in January as they optimistically hope, it will take several months to vaccinate enough people to allow us to go back to business as usual.

As far as the psychological effects, I think most people have already gotten over the denial and panic and have moved on to acceptance. Continuing on, particularly with an end in sight (the vaccine) shouldn’t create any new psychological issues.

I would agree with this assessment, with a caveat - there is still media out there downplaying a) the severity of the virus and b) whether CDC protocols involving masks and social distancing are effective in reducing the risk of transmission. As such there may well be an increase in the number of people who either don’t see the virus as a threat or grow increasingly impatient with protocols designed to protect others more than themselves. We’ve already seen this is some cases where the younger crowds are gathering at bars and other venues will little regard for masks or distancing.

Technically, in the long run, it doesn’t matter. Flattening the curve by reducing the exposure does not limit the number of people who become infected, it simply spreads it out over a longer period of time. Of course the advent of an effective vaccine in six months or so would truncate the drawn out curve, but the principle stands.

Not much point worrying about it if you ask me. If this thing just keeps killing hundreds of thousands of us a year, yep, society will be changing quite a bit. Little Katie missing her first kiss is likely to be more worried about the last few meals she missed.
