Sen. Cory Booker’s overt grandstanding during Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing took a bizarre turn Thursday, with DOJ officials confirming they cleared his “leaked email” ahead of his public demonstration.
“I am going to release the e-mail about racial profiling and I understand that the penalty comes with potential ousting from the Senate,” said Booker. “If Sen. Cornyn believes that I’ve violated Senate rules then I openly invite and accept the consequences.”
Despite Booker’s claims of “civil disobedience,” the emails were cleared for release by the Department of Justice and the George W. Bush Presidential Library hours before his statement.
“The irony is after Senator Booker said basically he was going to release the document anyway… it had already been worked out that this was going to be then released to the public,” Sen. Cornyn said.
“Apparently, some just wanted to break the rules and make a scene, but didn’t check their email,” a spokesman for committee Republicans said in a statement.
