I simply hurt for them because I know they hurt inside. That’s what all of this is about. The attempt to find their happiness, even if it’s on an insane path.

The OP clearly lays that out. The boy pitched the games. The girl pitchers sat on the bench so that he could pitch. If he wasn’t on the team, girls would have pitched those games.
And please don’t insult my intelligence by saying the girls didn’t mind. I’m sure they didn’t join the team as a pitcher in order to sit on the bench while a boy pitched in their place.
