How exactly is this Trump’s fault?
The CDC could have picked up the phone and called WHO at any point if they wanted to get their kits.
Instead the CDC is producing them not just for the US but for other countries as well.
Who made that decision and why?

This isn’t about a lack of test kits being available, it’s about the CDC approving different test parameters, and maintaining control of actually performing the tests themselves, reserving that to be done at state and federal labs rather than hospital labs because the original tests were coming up with false positives in some of the hospital labs.
And I hope that the investigations to follow will identify the problems and solutions. As always this will be a learning situation. And I hope that it will lead to a better response next time. From what I have read the danger of another Corona outbreak is expected.

The problem was that initially hospital labs were getting false positives because they weren’t following the selection guidelines for who was to be tested.
They then stopped making the kits available to all of the labs and required instead that the hospitals send samples into state and federal labs for testing and insisted on more stringent criteria to avoid false positives.

Oh it will happen again…that’s why I said we need to move just as fast as air travel.
IMO it’s just as great or greater threat then terrorism.
I listened to multiple Doctors in CA say the obvious. As soon as they discovered that they had to ask permission to give tests they knew there was a huge cause to be concerned.
There are always WHO, CDC, FDA guidelines issued as to who should be tested, especially with a new emerging virus.
But that is the problem. A person can be infected and fly before the problem is recognized. Or a infected person will travel not knowing they are infected. Tough problem to have.
The only way to prevent that would be to put everyone into a 15 day quarantine and test them both before flying and upon arrival.
That’s not something Americans would tolerate in any way.

That’s why we know it will happen again. Can’t stop it. But we need system in place that moves just as fast. When a new virus comes it need to set things into motion that is almost automated…now I’m just thinking out loud here. But whatever system we put into place needs to be border less and none political.
We already do and that system went to work immediately back in January.
I agree. The last couple of days I have watched some Doctors on the tube that have said that they are not going to shake hands at this time. And my thought was how hard it is to get people to change habits that are years ingrained.

I’m not so sure how effective that is…it’s seems to have incubated in Washington state for some time now…which leads me to think this started earlier then what China claimed.
Out here we have large Chinese community that travels back and forth almost on weekly bases.
That’s entirely possible since China was very slow to inform the rest of the world of the outbreak.
If you’ll remember back we discussed that at length in the original thread on the subject.
