Thinking back on that period, I would not go too far to congratulate draft resisters of that period for being against the war.

First of all, three million men served in the military during that period and two million of them saw duty in or related to Vietnam. Nineteen million other men were draft-eligible during those years but did not serve. So the experience of Donald Trump or Bill Clinton was hardly unique.

Having been involved with the anti-draft movement, I grew quite fed up that most of the young men I “assisted” were concerned only with protecting themselves and did not care at al about the war or those who served in their stead. Some were conscientious objectors to all wars; some were committed opponent of the venture in Vietnam but the vast majority were self-absorbed and self -interested, nothing more. Those attitudes, and my growing understanding that the draft was pushing the burden of military service almost entirely on underprivileged people caused me to abandon that volunteer work.

The draft system was one that enabled people with even minimal privilege to avoid the military – which is one reason why it was an awful system.

My conclusion was that the only equitable approach in a democratic society is universal service – as in Israel. I believe our approach to the use of military force would be quite different if every young person had an equal likelihood of being ordered to serve in military ventures.

Thank you for this well thought out and very sensitive to the issue response and…I couldn’t agree more. I believe this mandatory service would both strengthen and provide structure to a generation that is having a hard time finding it.

Yeah don’t hold your breath on that one! “Maverick” was the nickname McCain was proud of, but not so proud of the one the Vietnam vets themselves gave him which was “songbird”. The Vietnam vets lack of support for him is probably one the reasons he lost his bid for the Presidency twice! And those Vietnam vets make up a large portion of the “bikers for Trump” who are always mocked & insulted by leftists, so it’s a bit delusional to believe the Vets would turn on President Trump for whatever liberal socialist Democrat hair ball candidate that the Democrats cough up! NOT going to happen!

Erh im not the one saying that you cant speak on a subject unless you’ve experienced it yourself and im not in favor of civilian internment camps so it doesnt really apply. I’d like to hear more about that experience another time.

There are probably drafted Vietnam vets in our country, who lost fellow soldiers and friends to the Vietnamese or their prison camps, who support Donald Trump even after he trashed a POW. That just means that the other stuff that trump says is more important to them than what happened to their fellow soldiers.

It’s what President Trump does for the Military that matters and President Trump has delivered on his campaign promises so you should “brace yourself” that the Military will continue to support him over any anti-Military candidate the Dems come up with.
