CNBC: The U.S. national debt is rising by $1 trillion about every 100 days

Lol yes well
Sometimes objects in the mirror
are closer than they appear.

once the President and the Congress critters seriously talk about capping the budget and taking on entitlements maybe something will be worth discussing. I don’t think even the most delirious MAGA thinks Trump will ever push to reduce the actual debt total but we can live with a perpetual national mortgage by taking some painful but necessary steps. Debt service is already 17% of the overall budget.

I don’t even see how this could be fixed anymore. Even if the country completely dismantled its entire military, removed all social spending (meaning killing SSI, disability, food stamps, so on and so forth), killed all infrastructure upgrades, etc. this is basically impossible to really reduce at this point. Everyone coming after will pay for the follies and insanities of the generations who came before them.

When it got to this level before, there was good reason.
This time there is not.

When it got to this level before, the greatest generation,
thought it would be a good idea to pay it down.

It’s an either/or.
This time it really is.

Either the Greatest Generation was wrong to pay it down (worried too much)
or we would be wrong to do differently.

We need to bring back Doge.

DOGE, times ten.

And that would just be a good start.

they hate when republicans in charge borrow and spend like democrats do

Ok they’re the same, and that one loves it.

Why so much faster though?

because democrats. why else:

“Government shutdowns can boost the national debt because they delay economic activity and postpone fiscal decisions, while pausing federal programs and starting them up again can also increase costs.“

Pffffft, can’t be, the government closed it’s doors.

Well I do too.

As far as I am concerned, the whipsaw costs of stopping and starting things is really minuscule relative to the overall budget. It’s just a factor someone can complain about.

For me, we’re seeing that the country keeps running, even in the midst of the shutdown. It’s a great opportunity to cull off things the federal government shouldn’t be doing in the first place. (And yes, even that culling is minor to the overall budget, but it’s something all the same.)

And the things that are driving the vast majority of the debt–social security; Medicare/Medicaid/other health programs; the military–haven’t shut down at all.

Each one needs a deep DOGE-ing.

me too. but we dont sit silent when “our side” is doing it

You’d have a valid point if your side wasn’t shutting down the government in an attempt to spend MORE.

But they are so you don’t.

Rs and it’s not even close.

Your problem is your going to point at the White House when that’s not where spending comes from.

But it’s Donald, depending more and spending faster.

I’m not sure how you spelled that without a definition.
