Tommy got me interested in a topic I had researched awhile back taking about Badayev and the Chechen war which is an area I’ve studied a bit. These people historically practiced Sufism which traditionally are not so big into hardline Sunni practices.

After the Chechen war broke out in the early 90’s a lot of Wahhabi practicers came to fight jihad in Chechnya including Khabbab and Badayev who both wanted Sharia law and eventually got it after the first Chechen war. They were driven out and killed after the second Chechen war when they tried to get neighboring Dagestan to join their cause and invaded them which they were quickly repelled and Russia had the excuse they needed to launch the second Chechen war. This is basically what put Putin on the map.

Almost all of the Muslims that went to fight with ISIS from Chechnya were backers of Wahhabism and Salafism. Most regular muslims don’t bother me so much but that particular strain is pretty scary. I am not sure of there numbers, but it’s runs through many counties including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Afghanistan to name a few. If one is a member of Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Al-Shabaab, or Boko Haram that’s the type of Islam they practice.

I highly suggest a book for anyone interested in the Chechen wars written by a Russian conscript soldier who fought in both the first and second Chechen war called “One Soldiers War”. Some of the most brutal reading I have read on what humans are capable of doing to each other as well as the utter disorganization and inefficiency of the Russian army at that time. Highly recommended.

I know less about the shiites, I know some of the differences between them and Sunni worshippers but not what makes the violent groups like Hezbollah and many in Iran tick.

It’s and interesting topic, from what I have read some fear Indonesia is the country to watch on rising salifism.

Do you read the article? The problem is obviously groupthink. That has nothing to do with race. Who told your generation every problem is race?

Of course it was groupthink, but it was groupthink with a goal of keeping the group exclusive white, male, Anglo-Saxon, Protestants, Ivy League. It seems it had a lot to do with race. Race imparts culture and that’s key part of what the article was talking about. It’s also the thing you cant get by just sending some white, male, Anglo-Saxon, Protestants to the Defense Language Institute to turn out a bunch of ‘‘Arab’’ speakers.

Sweet, use this as a starting reference. It summarizes the history of Afghanistan, going down the list of its various conquerors and evolution. A lot still remains in the culture today. Some of Alexander’s fortresses are preserved (although partially uncovered due to the conflict) like Gobekli Tepe was.

Stalin spent some formative years in Baku, organizing workers strikes, doing his best Marxist stuff. He realized then how precious this part of the world was, and decided he would have it. Of course, he later to got it, because he was Stalin.
