Urban and rural people generally see the world differently from one another.

I am well aware of what the E.U spends on Defense.
I am also well aware of what the U.S. spends.

E.U defense spending as a percentage of G.D.P. = 1.51%
U.S. defense spending as a percentage of G.D.P. = 3.15%

My intent is to start unilaterally cutting the U.S. percentage in a number of manners, such as cutting back carrier production, eliminating certain nuclear elements, cutting end strength across the board.

We cannot sustain this level of spending, let alone increase it both parties would like to feed their respective defense contractors.

I would support a Naval Treaty to cap new tonnage and allow the United States, China and Russia a reprieve from this insane naval arms race.

This is NOT about me beating up on the European Union, this is about saving the United States some money.

Every country has war plans against their allies. It’s necessary. Your friend today could be your enemy tomorrow. Prussia and Great Britain were steadfast allies in the early to mid 19th century. Yet in WWI, just forty years after the alliances in Europe shifted, British and German troops were slaughtering each other by the thousands on the Somme river.

If any country can’t forget the world wars it’s the French.

In the first one they lost 25% of their young men. Basically an entire generation was either killed or emotionally destroyed.

In the second one they suffered four years under tyrannical Nazi and Vichy Collaborationist rule.

It’s less about US spending on NATO than compelling Europe to ramp up military-industrial complex at the cost of the social programs they enjoy, which when cut create investment opportunities for private corporatization of public assets. It is all a wealth extraction scheme.

Man, am I confused…

So the Emperor criticizes the EU for not contributing as much to NATO as the US does, except we count our entire military around the Globe as part of our contribution to NATO. Then the Emperor threatens to pull out of NATO if they don’t pony up the money.

So Macron takes the Emperor at his word and announces that the EU should create its own Army since the U.S. is going to pull out of NATO.

Now the Emperor is mad because Macron is trying to do what we’ve asked him to do - spend more money defending Europe. And he’s angry that Macron believes the U.S. will pull out of NATO, just because the Emperor actually threatened to pull out of NATO.

And can we talk Nukes for a minute?

Any self-respecting Army has an arsenal of Nuclear weapons and the ICBM’s to deliver them. Just look at the U.S., China, and Russia. Backward countries like India and Pakistan have 'em, too. Even little countries like North Korea and Israel have a few. And there’s a whole bunch of countries that don’t have them, but have the parts laying around in warehouses to build some, like Japan, South Korea, and South Africa.

So we dump NATO, or at least get them to spend more on Defense, and they can’t rely on the U.S. to Nuke back at Russia or Iran or Pakistan if they attack. They gotta get them some nukes, too. France and Britain already have a few hundred, but they’re up against Russia that has upwards of 12,000 warheads. So how many will an EU Army need? I’m thinking around 3,000 each for France, Germany, and Britain; 1000 or so for Italy and Spain. Will Turkey need some? You betcha’. There’s another 1000 warheads. Sweden and the Netherlands will stock up with about 500 or so each. And the countries on the front line, like Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia will want a couple dozen. Greece, seeing Turkey arm up, will get nervous and stockpile a couple hundred. And speaking of Turkey, how will Israel respond to a serious Islamic competitor in the Middle East? And if Israel starts openly building Nukes and the missiles to deliver them, what will Iran and Pakistan do in response?

So when the EU nukes up, what will big, bad Russia do about it. So much for SALT treaties that were between the U.S. and the USSR. Russia will increase their stockpile. This has got to make the new EU Army even more nervous, so they’ll build even more nukes. And outside Russia’s back door is China. Think they might get a little worried that their neighbor is increasing their arsenal? How might Japan and South Korea respond?

Be careful what you ask for - you might get it.

Only a good guy with a Nuke can stop a bad guy with a nuke.
