The radical plan to divide California into three separate states will officially appear on the ballot this fall; giving residents a chance to alter the Golden State’s history forever and sooth growing tensions between the liberal coast and rural interior.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the proposal officially earned a spot on the state’s ballot this November.

If passed by a majority of voters, it would kickstart a years-long legal battle between local and federal authorities and would eventually find its way to Congress.

Should California divide into three separate states -the southwest coast centered around Los Angeles, the north, and the south- it would be the first time in US history since the creation of West Virginia in 1863.

“Three states will get us better infrastructure, better education and lower taxes,” said Tim Draper, a technology mogul behind the measure. “States will be more accountable to us and can cooperate and compete for citizens.”
