Pride and nationalism. The government leaders bought popular support from their people with the proceeds of their oil reserves.

The incompetence came later when they could not maintain the industries and then bad monetary policy.

Are you implying that government takeover of industries is inherently a good thing if competent government officials are put in charge?

Government nationalized major industries. That is socialism. You then stated that incompetence came later.

The root cause of the problem was the take over. Government incompetence at running a major industry is a given.

You are looking for “equality of results or outcome” versus “equality of opportunity”.

A free capitalist system avails each individual the opportunity to achieve success and wealth; or to fail. A socialist system provides the same miserable outcome for everyone but the ruling class.

So paris Hilton and jezcoe have equal opportunity? Can I have some of those drugs your taking?

With capitalism in a free society, everyone has the opportunity to move up or down between the various classes. In socialism there are only 2 classes. The ruling class consisting of less than 1% of the population, and everyone else - who is doomed to live in abject poverty.

Which on the face is wrong. Example, you’ll have warrior class(military), artisan, farmer, industrial, etc.

So once again back to Venezuela. The government nationalized many industries - basically a socialist behavior. You don’t see that as the beginning of the end?

Government then has to run those industries, and you believe they can do it competently?

And the failure of the government to run those industries competently is the real reason Venezuela is a failed economy?
